The product Smart waste classification system integrating artificial intelligence and sound sensors won first prize in the National Science and Technology Research Competition organized by the Ministry of Education and Training. |
However, soon after, a first prize winning project called Smart waste sorting system integrating artificial intelligence and sound sensors by students Vu Ngoc Anh and Vu Dinh Dang Hien, Nguyen Sieu High School (Hung Yen), was said to be similar to a product of a foreign expert.
According to the product introduction, the project offers a solution that uses audio signals combined with artificial intelligence to identify and classify waste.
The system of the group of students from Nguyen Sieu school operates on the principle that when garbage is put in, the system listens to the sound of the garbage colliding with the edge of the bin and will analyze and classify the sound of the corresponding types of garbage, such as paper, plastic, metal and other types.
After the garbage is classified, the motor control unit rotates the garbage bin to the corresponding garbage bin and the motor opens the garbage bin lid to let the garbage fall into the bin.
On the scientific integrity forum, some opinions said that the project of the high school students has many similarities with the product of Samuel Alexander, an expert who published it on an international online platform for the engineering community and technology enthusiasts.

The foreign research product model is said to be similar to the project of the group of students at Nguyen Sieu High School. |
According to experts, both products use sound signals to classify waste. The system is trained and recognizes waste classification by analyzing the sound of garbage hitting the bin to make different sounds; the motor rotates the garbage compartment.
It is known that the project was carried out by teachers and students of Nguyen Sieu High School based on the fact that every day there are many types of waste released into the environment and people do not classify them properly. The project will be carried out within 1 year.
Regarding the incident, Mr. Thai Van Tai, Director of the General Education Department (Ministry of Education and Training) said: “The Ministry of Education and Training has received information about this incident. This is an open competition, so post-competition inspection is also a task of the Organizing Committee and we are doing this work. Through the inspection, if any violations are discovered, the Ministry of Education and Training and the Organizing Committee of the competition will strictly handle them according to the Competition Regulations and other regulations of the industry”.
According to Article 4, Circular 06/2024, promulgating the regulations for the national science and technology research competition for middle and high school students, the Ministry of Education and Training stipulates the requirements for the competition projects: "Ensure honesty in scientific research; no cheating, illegal copying, forgery; do not use or present the content and research results of others as your own research results".
