Bank of Japan (BoJ) Governor Kazuo Ueda has recently hinted that the next interest rate hike is near. However, other officials, such as Toyoaki Nakamura, have stressed caution in adjusting policy, raising doubts about the BoJ's ability to take drastic action in December.
The BoJ is expected to raise interest rates at its mid-December meeting, as data showed that Japan's inflation remained above its 2% target. Despite Japan's upward revision of its third-quarter GDP figures, doubts about the Bank of Japan's (BoJ) ability to continue raising interest rates have been a major drag on the JPY. This, coupled with a slight rise in the USD, has provided additional support for the USD/JPY pair.
However, geopolitical tensions, coupled with concerns about upcoming trade tariffs from US President-elect Donald Trump and a recent drop in US government bond yields, have provided strength to the yen.
This calls for caution before making any strong trading decisions around the USD/JPY pair. Investors may also look forward to the US consumer inflation data due this week for further clues on the Federal Reserve’s rate-cutting path and other significant drivers.
