The first time the Vietnamese team experienced VAR was in the quarter-finals of the 2019 Asian Cup. In total, the Vietnamese team under coach Park Hang Seo and Philippe Troussier played 14 matches with VAR.
The Vietnamese team's performance in the above matches was not good, with only 1 win, 1 draw and 12 losses. The only win was against the Chinese team at My Dinh Stadium in 2022. The draw was against the Japanese team at Saitama Stadium on March 29, 2022.
In the 14 matches mentioned above, the Vietnamese team was penalized 7 times, an average of 2 matches. 6 of those penalties were decisive in the outcome of the match, the most recent being the situation where Nguyen Thanh Binh pulled the shirt of an Indonesian player at the 2023 Asian Cup, leading to a 0-1 loss, thereby causing the Vietnamese team to be eliminated early.
Another notable statistic is that the Vietnamese team lost all matches where VAR decided to award penalties.
The Vietnamese team received many unfavorable decisions from VAR.
The fact that the Vietnamese team has received many unfavorable decisions from VAR has been a topic of public discussion for a long time. Recently, Mr. Duong Nghiep Khoi - General Secretary of the Vietnam Football Federation said that he will ask the VFF Referee Board to support and help the national team players behave appropriately in matches with VAR.
" In the upcoming training session, VFF and Mr. Troussier will coordinate and be determined to compete well in the second qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup, against the two most important opponents, Indonesia and Iraq ," Mr. Duong Nghiep Khoi shared.
" To do that, Mr. Troussier needs the support of the referee board. He smiled and asked me why he needed the support of the referee board, then I explained that currently our players do not understand how to behave with VAR in a match. Players need to know how to behave well on the field to avoid the recent mistakes that caused us to receive unfortunate red cards ."
Mr. Duong Nghiep Khoi gave an example of the situation where VAR denied the goal of the Vietnamese team against Iraq at the 2023 Asian Cup.
" With many years of experience as a match supervisor, I find it difficult to catch offside in that situation. The main referee did not even notice it. However, VAR caught offside. If Khang stood still, there is a high chance that the referee would not catch offside, but our player was afraid of being offside so he ran up. VAR thinks that Khang covered the opponent's eyes, affecting their vision, so he made a mistake, " Mr. Duong Nghiep Khoi explained.
" VAR has semi-automatic offside detection technology, showing the offside line and Khang's heel was under the Iraqi defense. Only now do Vietnamese players know that to adjust their playing style. As for obvious mistakes that don't require VAR, we have to learn from them ."
