Lao Bao border market is a cultural and trade activity organized for the first time by the People's Committee of Lao Bao town, Huong Hoa district at Lao Bao Trade Center to introduce and promote cultural identity, potentials and strengths in tourism and border trade economy; promote investment attraction for local socio-economic development. This is also an opportunity for folk artists, culture and art lovers inside and outside Lao Bao area, Huong Hoa district and some villages in Laos to meet, exchange, promote the unique traditional cultural values ​​of residents on both sides of the border, consolidate and strengthen solidarity, friendship, cooperation and mutual trust between Vietnam and Laos.

Lao Bao in the last days of 2024, the streets became more bustling and bustling to welcome people from both sides of the border to the market right next to the Lao Bao - Densavanh International Border Gate. Following the flow of people visiting the shop selling brocade woven items of Mr. Savang Inthithep and his family in Densavanh district, Laos, many customers chose for themselves brocade woven shirts and scarves with eye-catching colors.

Mr. Savang Inthithep said: “My colleagues and I have been in Lao Bao town since the day before the fair opened to prepare the necessary steps for displaying the booth. Our products are mainly brocade, selected from many different regions of Laos. Here we only sell affordable products, suitable for consumer needs. If customers want to order high-end brocade products, we will connect to deliver later.”

Along with colorful brocade products, the stall selling Lao specialties such as xum, nem, and grilled chicken of Mrs. Muoi in Sepon district is also bustling with customers. Mrs. Muoi, through a Vietnamese interpreter, introduces the restaurant's signature grilled chicken. The chicken is purchased from Seno, a small town located at the intersection of Highway 13 that intersects Highway 9 in the East-West direction, connecting Savannakhet (Laos) with Dong Ha (Quang Tri).

Seno chicken is grilled over hot coals and served with hot sticky rice and spicy and sour dipping sauce. This dish is popular with locals and tourists because of its delicious taste, different from other types of grilled chicken.

“My restaurant is quite popular in Laos because of its rustic dishes and guaranteed quality. Participating in the market is an opportunity for me to promote the specialties of my homeland and at the same time increase the restaurant’s revenue,” Ms. Muoi shared.

Coming to Lao Bao Border Market, there are not only typical goods of residents on both sides of Lao Bao - Densavanh border, but also agricultural products, OCOP products, typical dishes of communes and towns in Huong Hoa district and some business owners and individual households in the province come to promote and introduce their products. Ms. Ho Hoa My from Dakrong district brought to the market rice, chicken and regional specialties of Dakrong district such as bamboo-tube rice, grilled meat in bamboo tubes..., through which she exchanged culture, promoted typical products of her hometown and sought opportunities for cooperation, business, and entertainment at the end of the year.

Ms. Trang Nhung from Bo Ban, Trieu Phong district came to the market to find partners and typical goods and products sold in Lao Bao mountain town to connect and bring to Bo Ban market to sell. “Through markets like this, I can connect and find partners to exchange typical goods of ethnic minorities to sell in the lowlands, and vice versa, bringing typical goods of the plains and coastal areas to exchange in the border areas. Therefore, the border market has great attraction for us,” Ms. Trang Nhung shared.

Chairman of Lao Bao Town People's Committee Le Ba Hung said: “The Lao Bao border market will be organized and officially operate from December 21, 2024 to December 19 of the lunar calendar, with one market session every Saturday. For the first time, we will organize more than 50 booths at the Lao Bao border market, including agricultural and forestry products of the Van Kieu and Pa Ko ethnic groups, OCOP products in Huong Hoa district; typical culinary products, brocade products of the Lao people, with the hope of becoming a unique and new destination, attracting a large number of tourists to this beautiful town. In 2025, we will study to organize one market session every weekend. This is not only a place to display and promote agricultural products and local specialties, but also gives visitors the opportunity to experience the unique culture of highland ethnic groups through folk art performances and traditional music in an open space in Lao Bao mountain town.
