Businesses contribute to responding to climate change

Thời ĐạiThời Đại20/09/2023

Realizing the impact of climate change, more and more businesses are promoting their role and responsibility in responding to climate change with practical actions, creating a widespread impact across the country.

In February 2023, in Hanoi, Vietnam Dairy Products Joint Stock Company (Vinamilk) coordinated with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to launch a tree planting project aiming for net zero emissions by 2050. The project will be implemented over 5 years from 2023-2027 with a total budget of 15 billion VND.

After Hanoi, the 2023 journey will be conducted by Vinamilk and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to research, plan and plant trees in other localities across the country.

Previously, from 2012 to 2020, Vinamilk and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment coordinated to implement the 1 Million Trees for Vietnam Fund at 56 locations in 20 provinces and cities with a total value of 12.5 billion VND. This program is a typical example of efforts and actions for the environment, for life and for a green future.

As an FDI enterprise present in Vietnam for more than 30 years, SCG Group (Thailand) is highly appreciated for applying ESG criteria in its business activities. The Group has launched the ESG 4 Plus strategy towards Set Net Zero, Go Green, Reduce Inequality, and Embrace Collaboration. The initial investment is estimated at 70 billion baht (equivalent to more than 47 trillion VND) with the goal of improving production processes and promoting low-carbon activities to achieve the target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 20% by 2030.

To achieve this goal, SCG has applied the circular economy model to its development strategy. Specifically, SCG focuses on integrating technology and innovation to develop products and services under the "SCG Green Choice" brand, which meet the needs of customers and the environment. "SCG Green Choice" products are made from recycled materials, helping to reduce waste during installation, reduce energy consumption or use renewable energy such as solar energy. In 2030, SCG aims to double the proportion of products certified with SCG Green Choice from 32% to 67%.

SCG and its member companies encourage people in the community to join hands to protect the environment through practical activities. The most prominent is the pilot project of waste classification at source at Long Son Primary Schools in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province, organized by SCG Group and Long Son Petrochemical Company Limited (a member of SCG Chemicals - SCG), to educate students on waste classification and call for the response of families and schools so that the waste classification model can be replicated in the community.

Vinamilk and SCG are among many businesses in Vietnam that are actively participating in the fight against climate change. Through practical activities such as tree planting, developing green tree systems, supporting people's livelihoods; communicating to raise public awareness in resource management, environmental protection, and climate change response... businesses have been contributing to realizing Vietnam's goal of net zero emissions. Photo: Hochiminhcity.gov.vn[/caption] Emphasizing the role of enterprises in responding to climate change, at the Ho Chi Minh City Economic Forum 2023 held on September 13, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Le Cong Thanh suggested that enterprises need to participate in a pioneering role in the energy transition process, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and that enterprises play a key role in successfully implementing the commitment to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. In particular, Vietnam is also in the process of establishing a domestic carbon market, this is an opportunity for enterprises leading in science and technology in reducing greenhouse gas emissions to buy and sell, exchange carbon credits from energy transition activities and greenhouse gas emission reduction. According to Mr. Thanh, businesses have many conditions to approach and achieve the net zero emission target in a multi-objective manner. Accordingly, businesses not only reduce greenhouse gas emissions from production and business activities but also change management processes, cut emissions in internal operations and in the supply chain, and have activities to exchange and offset greenhouse gas emissions in the short term. In addition, businesses must take advantage of emerging capital sources and green financial flows. Mobilizing funding to achieve net zero emission targets requires creative and sustainable cooperation between stakeholders with large capital sources from public and private investment.
Within the framework of the Ho Chi Minh City Economic Forum on September 13, Ho Chi Minh City honored and awarded the title of “Ho Chi Minh City Green Enterprise” for the first time to 90 green enterprises of the city. These are 90 enterprises that have been making great efforts to implement green transformation, invest in technological innovation, apply green criteria in production and business, comply with environmental regulations, and contribute to the city in building a healthy living and working environment...
