IELTS preparation for university?

In recent years, many students in big cities like Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and even in the provinces have been "racing" to take international certification exams to gain early admission to universities. Even though they are not well-off, many parents still spend a lot of money for their children to study IELTS.

Nguyen Mai Thanh Thao, a 12th grade student at Lang Giang 1 High School (Bac Giang), shared that she has just achieved an IELTS certificate with a score of 8.0 for the purpose of applying to university.

Thao said that at first she studied IELTS because she wanted to study abroad, but at the last minute she “turned around”. “My family oriented me to study quite early. My sister is also an English teacher, so she gave me a lot of advice. At first, I planned to study abroad in Australia or New Zealand. But then I saw that the scholarship opportunities were not high, because my profile was “not good”, so I decided to study in the country”.

Thao also said that she has an average score of about 9.0, her goal in the near future is to achieve a high score in the provincial excellent student exam in English, plus an 8.0 IELTS score, she confidently applies to the English Pedagogy major.

Thao shared that many English centers with reputation for IELTS certificate preparation come to her hometown Bac Giang to recruit students, but she chose to study online with Vietnamese teachers in Hanoi.

“I observed that other students who studied at review centers often had low test scores, only 6.0-6.5. I chose to study online 1-1 with teachers who had "huge" records and prestige. On the other hand, by registering for this intensive course, I got the benefit of free speaking practice with native teachers, so my test scores were high,” Thao said.

The total tuition and exam fees are about 20 million. "I feel that the investment in studying is worth it. With this score, I can use it for university admission and my four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing will all improve," Thao said.

Nguyen Thao Nguyen, a first-year student of the Faculty of Digital Communications and Multimedia Engineering, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, said that at the end of grade 11, after researching the school and major she wanted to study at university, she and her mother decided to study for the IELTS exam to use for university admission.

Before that, I had studied English with a good teacher near my house, so when the center took the entrance exam, I got about 5.5. After that, I registered for an online class for 8 months, with a tuition fee of more than 15 million VND, and was guaranteed an output of 7.5.

Talking about the goal of choosing to take the IELTS exam, this student said that choosing to study IELTS is to increase the chance of university admission and improve his English skills.

“I think that if you understand the nature and use English regularly, studying for IELTS will dramatically change your English level. However, IELTS is an academic exam, so if you don’t study for a while, you will still have difficulty when you take it again,” Nguyen shared.

How to learn IELTS effectively?

Mr. Nguyen Nhat Hung, CEO of SocioLogic Debate and Critical Thinking Company Limited, believes that studying IELTS systematically will give students the opportunity to approach and become familiar with the test format, practice, and take mock tests.

The process of learning English should take place naturally, students should develop their language foundations in school classes and at the same time use English as a tool in one or more different activities.

“You should not learn English as a destination, but use English as a tool to express your opinions, to develop different aspects of yourself such as knowledge and social experience,” Mr. Hung stated his opinion.

Ms. Le Nhu Hoang, Director of an English center in Buon Ma Thuot city, commented that it is not uncommon to see many students, big and small, rushing to the IELTS test center after finishing their school day. But the reality is that passing the IELTS test does not mean being able to speak or use English afterwards. Therefore, to study IELTS effectively, one must consider it a serious matter and have clear learning goals.

“If you have a clear goal for your studies (university admission, graduation requirements), that’s great. If you study IELTS to use English fluently and not forget, it requires students to improve their English level,” Ms. Hoang said.
