On the morning of May 16, weightlifter Nguyen Quoc Toan surprised Vietnamese weightlifting fans with his excellent performance in the 89kg category at the 32nd SEA Games.
Nguyen Quoc Toan played excellently, breaking 3 SEA Games records on the morning of May 16.
Initially, Quoc Toan conquered the 150kg weight in the snatch competition and then continued to succeed at 155kg, thereby breaking the old record of 150kg.
Quoc Toan continued to perform excellently in the clean and jerk, conquering the 185kg weight and then lifting it to 190kg. He continued to be successful in this round to break the SEA Games record (old record 187kg).
In the final round, Quoc Toan lifted 193kg but failed. However, the number 190kg was enough to help him win the gold medal and break the SEA Games total lift record (345kg compared to 337kg).
Quoc Toan is still a fairly unfamiliar name as he only won a bronze medal at the previous SEA Games.
It is worth mentioning that at the Congress at home, Quoc Toan competed in the 81kg category.
His promotion to compete in the 89kg weight class was initially considered risky, but he proved that he chose the right direction.
As of noon on May 16, Vietnamese weightlifters had won 3 gold medals at the 32nd SEA Games, all brought home by male athletes, namely Lai Gia Thanh (55kg), Tran Minh Tri (67kg) and Nguyen Quoc Toan (89kg).
