According to doctors and medical experts at Vinmec Hospital, Xuan Son underwent intramedullary nailing surgery on his tibia after suffering a complex shaft fracture. This surgery required meticulous planning and advanced techniques to ensure the fastest possible bone healing and recovery. Currently, Son is in the initial stages of a rehabilitation program that will last at least six months.
Xuan Son will undergo a lengthy recovery process.
In March, when the Vietnamese national team faces Laos in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers, Xuan Son will continue to strictly adhere to his treatment and rehabilitation regimen. The initial phase of his recovery focuses on pain management, neuromuscular activation, and restoring mobility. Son is also supported by state-of-the-art equipment such as a European-standard cold compress system, an electrical stimulation device for pain relief, and a training assistance robot.
Xuan Son trained at home during the Lunar New Year holidays.
In addition, Xuan Son's diet is closely monitored daily, based on his individual needs and training intensity. This ensures that the player has enough energy and nutrients to recover quickly and effectively.
After the Lunar New Year holiday, Xuan Son began phase 2 of her recovery process.
Xuan Son's rehabilitation process is divided into four main stages, each with specific goals and treatment methods to ensure the player can return to competition in top form.
Phase 1 involves pain control and neuromuscular activation (the first 1-2 weeks after surgery) with the goal of controlling pain, reducing swelling, and preventing complications such as muscle atrophy or stiffness using cold compresses, electrical stimulation devices, and gentle exercises such as leg flexion and extension.

Phase 2 involves strengthening and improving range of motion (from week 3 to month 2), with the goal of strengthening muscles and improving joint range of motion through physical therapy exercises such as gentle leg raises, resistance band exercises, and biofeedback machines.
Phase 3 involves comprehensive rehabilitation and physical preparation (from the 3rd to the 5th month) with the goal of restoring motor function, preparing the body for high-intensity training through light jogging, ball exercises, strengthening the whole body, and improving balance.
Coach Kim Sang-sik will have to find a replacement for Xuan Son during this time.
Phase 4 involves high-intensity training and motor analysis (from the 6th month onwards) with the goal of returning to maximum intensity training and being ready for competition. The methods used include specialized football training such as sprinting, changes of direction, and light collisions, along with motor analysis to assess recovery potential.
After the Lunar New Year holiday this year (after the 6th day of the lunar calendar), Xuan Son will return to Vinmec Hospital to continue treatment and is expected to begin phase 2 of his recovery. By the time the Vietnamese national team plays against the Laotian national team in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers this March, Xuan Son will still be in phase 2 of this process.
Xuan Son wished her fans a Happy New Year in Vietnamese, and thanked her special dad in Vietnam.
Although unable to play with the national team during this time, Xuan Son still receives attention and support from Nam Dinh Club, the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF), and fans. The ultimate goal of his treatment is to help Son return to playing at his best, continuing to contribute to the national team and his club.
