Elon Musk's satellite internet service continues to have a boom year as Starlink internet traffic more than triples in 2024.
Global internet traffic through Starlink is expected to more than triple by 2024, according to data from IT services provider Cloudflare.
Starlink uses a network of thousands of low-orbit satellites to provide high-speed internet to users in areas with limited mobile and fixed broadband. The service has expanded rapidly since last year.
Starlink is now deployed in several new countries, including Chad, Mongolia, Argentina, and is also available on airplanes and cruise ships.
In September, United Airlines announced it had signed a deal to begin offering free Starlink Wi-Fi on all flights starting in 2025. Hawaiian Airlines has been doing so since the beginning of the year.
Several cruise lines are also using the service. Carnival Cruises’ fleet has been equipped with Starlink since May.
In June, SpaceX launched a laptop-sized version of its Starlink Mini satellite dish. The company also developed a Roam package for travelers.
Cloudflare said Starlink saw rapid growth in areas with limited internet connectivity. For example, traffic in Georgia and Paraguay, where Starlink will launch in November and December 2023, increased 100-fold and 900-fold, respectively.
In 2023, Internet traffic via Starlink will also triple.
