Sharing at a recent press conference to provide medical information, Dr. Ha Anh Duc, Chief of Office, Ministry of Health, said that recently, in our country, the number of cases of respiratory diseases has tended to increase, especially in children, the elderly, and people at high risk...

In particular, regarding the Covid-19 epidemic, according to reports from many countries, the epidemic is showing signs of returning. For example, in Malaysia and Singapore, the number of Covid-19 cases recorded a 50-100% increase per week. In Singapore, the number of hospitalizations due to Covid-19 recorded an increase of about 65% in the week from November 26 to December 2.

Health authorities in these countries believe the reason for the resurgence in Covid-19 cases is due to reduced immunity among people and increased trade during the year-end tourist and festival season.

In recent years, the situation of infectious diseases in the world has been unpredictable and difficult to forecast. Environmental pollution, climate change, natural disasters, floods, storms, urbanization, etc. have created favorable conditions for infectious diseases to appear, spread and break out.

In the context of increasing globalization, pandemics in general are increasing in frequency.

The Ministry of Health stated that our country is in the winter-spring period, the unusual change of weather is the cause of the emergence and spread of infectious diseases, especially respiratory diseases such as flu, measles, rubella, whooping cough... At the same time, there is a potential risk of outbreaks of infectious diseases.

This is also the time when the demand for trade and tourism at the end of the year increases, creating favorable conditions for pathogens to spread, possibly increasing the number of infectious diseases and respiratory diseases.

In Vietnam, the Covid-19 situation is still under control. The number of recorded cases is low, scattered in some localities. The majority have mild symptoms or no symptoms. The number of hospitalizations and the number of severe patients in treatment facilities is low.

Results of pathogen surveillance show that no new or unusual variants have been recorded.

To continue to effectively and sustainably control Covid-19 and be prepared and proactive in responding to the disease's return, the Ministry of Health has issued a plan to sustainably control and manage Covid-19 for the 2023-2025 period.

This includes a plan to ensure medical work in the event that the Covid-19 epidemic has a new, more dangerous strain that breaks out widely and exceeds the system's capacity.

Regarding highly pathogenic avian influenza (A/H5N1), Vietnam has not recorded any human cases in 2023. However, according to information from the Department of Animal Health, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, avian influenza outbreaks still occur sporadically in localities.

The current unusual seasonal weather is a favorable condition for the development of avian influenza virus, and there is also a trend of increasing poultry farming in preparation for the 2024 Lunar New Year. This poses a potential risk of avian influenza infection to humans.
