According to information from Children's Hospital 2 (HCMC), recently, doctors admitted a 3-year-old boy, residing in HCMC, to the hospital with symptoms of abdominal pain and vomiting. The patient had a distended abdomen, severe pain, fever and severe infection.

The X-ray results showed a series of radiopaque foreign objects stuck together in the abdomen. Doctors thought that the foreign objects were magnets and could cause intestinal perforation. Immediately after that, the patient underwent emergency surgery that same night.
Doctor Nguyen Hien - General Surgery Department, Children's Hospital 2, main surgeon - said that during the laparoscopic surgery into the abdomen, there were many perforated intestines, a lot of feces in the abdomen, pseudomembranes, intestinal adhesions, and many magnets (like beads) stuck together. These magnets were divided into 2 segments, one at the beginning of the small intestine, one at the end of the small intestine.
The doctor removed a total of 31 magnets from the child's intestines and stitched up 8 holes. This is also the highest number of foreign magnets ever found at Children's Hospital 2.
Through medical history, the patient often played with toys with his 11-year-old brother. However, this time the patient was playing alone without supervision and swallowed 31 magnets.
Doctor Pham Ngoc Thach - Deputy Director of Children's Hospital 2 - said that each year, the unit has more than 10 cases of magnetic foreign objects causing intestinal perforation complications that require surgery.
Through this case, the doctor recommends that parents with young children pay attention to seemingly harmless objects and toys around their children, because if not careful, it can leave many unfortunate consequences.
