GĐXH - A 2-year-old girl with multiple perforations in her digestive tract due to swallowing 27 magnets was successfully treated at Dong Nai Children's Hospital.
Information from Dong Nai Children's Hospital said that as of February 11, the health condition of the 2-year-old girl D.KA, residing in Long Binh ward, Bien Hoa city, Dong Nai province, who suffered from multiple perforations in her digestive tract due to swallowing 27 magnets, has stabilized, her stomachache is gone, she has good bowel movements, and will be discharged in about a week.
Multiple perforations in the intestine due to the magnet being tightly attracted to the stomach wall.
Previously, on February 10, the girl was admitted to the hospital with mild abdominal pain, suspected of swallowing a foreign object. The patient's family said that the girl had complained of abdominal pain around the navel 2 days before, but the pain was only mild so the family did not pay attention.
On the evening of February 9, the baby's mother accidentally discovered that the baby had swallowed a foreign object, so the next morning she took the baby to Dong Nai Children's Hospital for examination.

Here, doctors examined, combined ultrasound and X-ray results and discovered many foreign objects in the child's digestive tract, so they ordered an emergency endoscopy to urgently remove the foreign objects.
During the endoscopy, the doctors discovered 11 magnets that were attracted to each other and standing upright, firmly attached to the underside of the stomach. The doctors removed 10 of them, but the last one was so firmly attached to the stomach wall that they had to perform an endoscopic surgery to remove the magnet.
During the laparoscopic surgery, the doctors discovered a very tightly adhered section of the intestine that could not be pulled out, so they decided to switch the patient to open surgery. After the open surgery, the doctors discovered a magnet that had penetrated the intestinal wall. The doctors removed 8 magnets from the intestine.
Through examination, doctors discovered a magnet attracted to a section of the small intestine near the duodenum. After removing the magnet, they discovered a hole in the back of the stomach and a hole in the small intestine near the duodenum. Through these two holes, doctors removed 8 more square magnets, about 3mm long, and proceeded to suture the hole and clean the wound for the child patient.
Warning about magnetic foreign objects that are life-threatening
Doctor Lu Qui Trang, Department of General Surgery, Dong Nai Children's Hospital, said that the surgery lasted nearly 3 hours, doctors removed 27 magnets from the patient's digestive tract. These magnets were attached to children's toys and were swallowed by the patient.
According to Dr. Lu Qui Trang, foreign objects such as magnets are very dangerous when swallowed into the digestive tract because magnets have an attractive property. When swallowed in large quantities, the particles will be attracted to each other and cannot move, so the body cannot eliminate them through defecation. When the magnets are attracted to the intestinal wall, it will cause intestinal perforation, septic shock, and endanger life. This child patient was fortunate to have timely surgery so there were not many complications in the digestive tract.
Doctors recommend that children should not play with toys containing magnets or small batteries because children under 5 years old are often curious and can easily swallow them. Toys for children under 5 years old need to be highly safe. In particular, when discovering that a child has swallowed any foreign object, it is necessary to immediately take them to a medical facility for timely intervention to avoid unfortunate incidents.
