Defender Dani Alves has suggested the woman who accused him of sexual assault has no clear conscience, and has only apologised to his wife Joana Sanz.

On June 20, Alves gave an exclusive interview to journalist Mayka Navarro, speaking out for the first time since being imprisoned for allegedly sexually assaulting a 23-year-old woman at a nightclub in Barcelona on December 30, 2022.

"I accepted this interview to speak out for the first time, to give people a chance to know what I think," the Brazilian defender explained.

According to the victim's testimony, despite her resistance, Alves still forced her to have sex in the bathroom of the VIP area at Sutton nightclub, Barcelona on the evening of December 30. She was then taken to the Hospital Clinic in Barcelona, where she was tested for biological evidence.

However, the 39-year-old defender insisted that the woman's horrifying and terrifying stories were false. Alves also took a swipe at his accuser, saying: "I don't know if she has a clear conscience, if she sleeps well at night. But I forgive her."

The former PSG and Barca defender paused for a moment, then continued: "I appeal to her conscience. I don't sleep well at night. Not at all. I have a clear conscience. I never hurt anyone on my own, and I didn't hurt her that night."

Alves later spoke out about the incident that took place on the night of December 30: "I went into the bathroom after her, and didn't even lock the door. The door was always open, she could have left because I was mostly just sitting on the toilet."

According to Alves, the 23-year-old woman may have received bad advice or felt bad about what she did, so she reported him. After that, she did not know how to get out of the mess and was forced to "go with" the lies.

After Alves was arrested for alleged sexual assault, his wife, model Joana Sanz, filed for divorce. The Spanish model also moved out of her home in Barcelona - at Alves' request - to Madrid, where she is said to have started a new relationship with a businessman.

When asked by journalist Navarro if he had to apologize to anyone for what happened, Alves once again asserted his innocence and added: "The only person I have to apologize to is my wife, Joana Sanz."

Alves was taken into custody at the Mossos d'Esquadra de Les Corts station in Barcelona on the morning of January 20, and has had his bail requests rejected three times. According to El Periodico , Alves' case has been scheduled for trial this fall, between October and November, with the exact date yet to be officially confirmed. If convicted, the Brazilian defender could face a sentence of between six and 12 years in prison, under the Sexual Freedom Law that comes into effect in October 2022.

The source said the judges reviewed the evidence twice and came to the same conclusion, that there were some signs that corroborated the victim's testimony and rejected the explanations given by Alves. Police found seven of the victim's fingerprints in the water tank and also in the sink. Footprints also showed a pattern of movements at the scene that matched the two accounts given by the accuser.
