According to El Pais on the afternoon of March 20th, the Spanish Court of Appeal granted Alves' request for bail pending sentencing. In addition to paying a bail bond of $1.08 million, the former Barca defender also had his passport confiscated, must appear in court weekly, and is prohibited from contacting or traveling within a one-kilometer radius of his accuser.

On February 22, Alves was sentenced to 4 years and 6 months in prison for rape and ordered to pay $163,000 in restitution to the victim. The court had initially denied Alves's bail request, citing the "risk of fleeing." He subsequently appealed and requested bail again. "I believe in justice and I will not flee. I am prepared to serve the court until the very end," Alves said at the hearing.
After the trial court handed down its verdict, Barca removed Alves from their list of legends. However, a few days later they restored the former player's image.
Alves is considered the best right-back of the last 15 years. The 40-year-old former player won three Champions League titles, six La Liga titles with Barca, two UEFA Cups with Sevilla, Serie A with Juventus, two Ligue 1 titles with PSG, and Olympic and Copa America gold medals with the Brazilian national team. Alves won a total of 43 collective titles, just one short of the record held by his former teammate Lionel Messi.
