Before 2016, people in the Red River delta area of Thanh Thuy district, Phu Tho province could only grow corn, peanuts, and beans on alluvial land. With current prices, Mr. Hoang Trieu Vu, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Thach Dong commune, said that each corn harvest was about 1.5 million VND/sao, making people's lives difficult and many alluvial lands were abandoned.
“In 2016, Traphaco Company surveyed the soil, drainage capacity... and found it suitable to grow morning glory to get seeds to make Boganic liver tonic. Compared to corn, the income from morning glory is 4-7 times higher, people are very happy” – Mr. Vu shared.
Before, everyone thought that morning glory only had purple flowers, but it turns out there is also a type that has white flowers and is planted at the beginning of the year, and purple flowers at the end of the year.
On a day off, Ms. Hoa, the daughter-in-law of a family growing morning glory in Thach Dong, returned to the village to harvest seeds for her mother-in-law.
At the price Traphaco is purchasing, each sao of morning glory earns 7.5-8 million VND, but the harvest time is only half as short as the corn crop. This income is quite good for Hoa's family, not to mention that this plant is quite benign, and the elderly are also healthy enough to take care of it.
Morning glory is a “good” plant, even the elderly can take care of it. Current productivity in Phu Tho is 70 – 80 kg of seeds/sao.
Mr. Nguyen Huy Van, deputy general director of Traphaco, shared that they brought morning glory to grow in Thach Dong and another commune in Thanh Thuy district since 2016, but the preparation began several years before that.
Morning glory is healthy, but Traphaco's care must follow GACP standards, which means Good Practice for the Care and Collection of Medicinal Herbs as recommended by the World Health Organization, so the process must be strictly followed.
In return for the strict process, Traphaco provides a lot of support to farmers. Mr. Van said that the company provides seeds and costs for making trellises, then buys all grade 1 seeds.

With this model, along with the development of growing Artichoke in Sapa (Lao Cai) and Bitter ground vegetable in Phu Yen, Traphaco has proactively used all the best quality medicinal herbs to produce Baganic liver tonic (as well as proactively using medicinal herbs such as Polyscias fruticosa to produce blood circulation and brain nourishment, and Golden chrysanthemum for eye tonic...).
Traphaco is also the first manufacturer in Vietnam to grow morning glory to produce medicine, because many companies are still using wild morning glory imported from China.
Coming to Thach Dong this time, among the morning glory trees, there were shadows of farmers wearing light blue uniforms. The model of combining "three houses" of farmers - producers - scientists appeared in this way.
In which, farmers change crops and have better income; there are technical staff to monitor, support planting and caring for medicinal herbs; businesses can proactively source quality raw materials, reinvest in raw material areas for sustainable production; consumers can buy good quality products at stable prices.

Mr. Nguyen Van Mui, the owner of a morning glory grower in Thach Dong, said he has more than 4 sao of medicinal herbs, with 2 morning glory crops and 1 corn crop per year.
“Traphaco staff are very strict, when to fertilize, when to spray, the books must be fully recorded, otherwise we will be fined and refused to buy immediately. After 8 years of working with this tree, we now know every detail of the tree, love the tree so that the tree can love people” - Mr. Mui shared.
This model has been developed by Traphaco in a number of raw material areas and currently 7 areas have been recognized by the Department of Traditional Medicine Management, Ministry of Health as meeting GACP standards.
It must be added that the company and growers have made great efforts to meet the strict standards set forth, and since then there have been 7 green, sustainably developed medicinal herb growing areas.
According to Mr. Van, this is how Traphaco develops the medicinal value chain, but as a green company, a company for people, Traphaco's purchase price of blue morning glory is double the purchase price of wild seeds imported from China.
The company works with farmers from land selection, seed selection, seed and production support, developing raw material areas associated with livelihoods and local socio-economic development.
