The United Nations Population Fund estimates that Ukraine's population has fallen by more than 10 million people and that population stability will depend on an end to hostilities with Russia.

The Kyiv Independent on October 23 quoted Ms. Florence Bauer, regional director of the Eastern Europe and Central Asia branch of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), saying that Ukraine's population has decreased by more than 10 million since the conflict in 2014. Besides the population decrease, the number of refugees has increased to 6.7 million people.

"The fertility rate has fallen sharply and is now around 1 child per woman, one of the lowest in the world," Ms. Bauer said at a press conference in Geneva, Switzerland, on October 22.

According to the United Nations, Ukraine's birth rate is currently the lowest in Europe.

Refugees make up a large part of Ukraine’s shrinking population, with casualties from the war another factor. “It’s hard to get exact numbers, but estimates range into the tens of thousands of casualties,” Bauer said.

Ukraine's population was 37.441 million as of January 1, 2024, but is expected to decline further in the coming years. In July, the United Nations predicted that the country's population would fall to 15.3 million by 2100.

Ukraine and UNFPA have collaborated on developing a national demographic strategy for Ukraine, Ms. Bauer said. The strategy focuses on human capital rather than just trying to increase the birth rate.

According to Ms. Bauer, Ukraine's path to demographic stability depends on ending the fighting.

Russia also faces a population crisis, with its population forecast to fall by about 7 million people over the next two decades.

In another development, British Defense Minister Luke Pollard wrote on social network X on October 23 that more than 200 Ukrainian pilots have been trained in the UK.

"Today I attended the graduation of the latest batch of pilots from the Royal Air Force training programme. These pilots will soon be flying Ukrainian F-16s. The UK will stand by Ukraine for as long as necessary," he wrote.

Ukrainian pilots have been training in the UK since September 2023.

In another move to support Ukraine, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer's office said on October 23 that the UK would provide $155 million in maritime aid to Ukraine. In addition, London will seek additional partners to jointly distribute hundreds of drones and surveillance radars to protect the "grain corridor" in the Black Sea.
