In recent years, cinnamon has become a key economic crop, helping many people in Van Yen and Tran Yen districts, Yen Bai province change their lives, escape poverty, and gradually become rich.

Every house grows cinnamon

Arriving at Ban Tat village, Chau Que Ha commune, Van Yen district, we were surprised to see many spacious, beautifully designed, modern houses looming under the hills and cinnamon forests.

Billion dollar houses are built thanks to cinnamon planting.

The family of Mr. Hoang Van On (born in 1968) is one of many households in Ban Tat village that owns such a house. "My family escaped poverty more than ten years ago. In 2019, I built a villa worth more than 2.2 billion VND, then bought a car worth 1.4 billion VND. All from more than 20 hectares of land growing cinnamon trees," Mr. On happily shared.

Mr. Ban Ton Son, Secretary of the Chau Que Ha Commune Party Committee, took us to learn about the reality and excitedly said: Thanks to cinnamon trees, the lives of the people have changed significantly, many households have escaped poverty, and many households are considered well-off and wealthy. Up to now, the multidimensional poverty rate of the commune has decreased to 12.2%; the average income per capita has reached nearly 46.6 million VND/person/year.

Chau Que Ha commune has a total area of over 8,700 hectares, of which over 6,000 hectares are planted with cinnamon trees; the whole commune has nearly 2,200 households, of which there are also about the same number of households planting cinnamon, just like the popular saying: "In Chau Que Ha, every household plants cinnamon".

According to Mr. Nguyen Dinh Dang, Vice Chairman of Chau Que Ha Commune People's Committee, in recent years, the price of dry cinnamon has fluctuated around 45-50 million VND/ton, some families in the commune harvest about 20 tons/year, earning about 1 billion VND; many households harvest an average of 5-7 tons/year, earning about 300 million VND, and even small households earn hundreds of millions of VND each year from cinnamon trees.

"Cinnamon trees have truly become a key economic crop, and income from cinnamon trees has become the main source of income for the entire commune," said Mr. Dang.

Suitable climate and soil

Leaving Van Yen district, we followed provincial road 163 to Kien Thanh commune, Tran Yen district.

Yen Bai people take care of cinnamon hills worth billions.

Mr. Loc Van Kich, in Dong Cat village, said that many households in the village have been growing cinnamon for more than 20 years. Currently, his family alone has more than 7 hectares of hill land growing cinnamon.

"Initially, cinnamon trees only require money to buy seedlings. In the first 3 or 4 years, the only work required is weeding. From the 5th year onwards, the trees will be thinned out and income will begin to come from selling bark, stems and leaves. On average, my family earns more than 100 million VND per year. When the cinnamon is 15 years old or older, it can be peeled off completely," Mr. Kích said.

Because it is suitable for the climate and soil, and is easy to grow and care for, cinnamon trees in Kien Thanh always grow and develop well, with high essential oil content. Previously, cinnamon was planted sporadically, in small clusters, but later it was planned and planted in a concentrated manner to create a raw material area.

Up to now, the cinnamon area in Kien Thanh has increased to nearly 2,800 hectares. Some villages have large areas such as: Dong Song 545 hectares, Dong Cat over 456 hectares, Khe Rong 302 hectares, Kien Lao, 258 hectares, Dong Phay 325 hectares, An Thinh 377 hectares, Dong Ruong 54 hectares.

To ensure enough raw cinnamon for exploitation, each year, people in the commune plant about 30 hectares of new land and replant nearly 100 hectares after exploitation.

On average, each year, people in the commune harvest over 3,000 tons of fresh cinnamon bark and over 6,000 tons of branches and leaves along with a large amount of cinnamon wood, bringing in an income of nearly 100 billion VND. In 2024, it is estimated that people in the commune will earn over 60 billion VND from cinnamon bark and 10 billion VND from cinnamon trunks.

Increase organic cinnamon growing area

To help people feel secure in developing cinnamon cultivation, Kien Thanh commune authorities have acted as representatives to link up the consumption of products with many production facilities in the area. Currently, in the commune, there is 1 cooperative, 2 cooperative groups and more than 10 points to buy cinnamon bark for preliminary processing and resale to traders. In addition, there are dozens of facilities to buy branches, leaves and tree trunks for processing.

The organic cinnamon production movement is increasingly spreading in Kien Thanh.

Mr. Ly Sinh Thang, owner of a cinnamon bark purchasing and processing facility in Kien Thanh commune, said: "In 2019, my family opened a facility to purchase cinnamon bark products from people. After processing and drying, we sell them to traders. On average, every day, my facility purchases and processes 2-3 tons of cinnamon bark from people."

Recognizing the benefits of cinnamon, in recent times, Kien Thanh commune has closely coordinated with the authorities of Tran Yen district to promote propaganda and provide technical guidance on growing clean cinnamon and producing organic cinnamon.

The organic cinnamon production movement is also spreading more and more. Up to now, in Kien Thanh, more than 1,300 hectares of organic cinnamon have been developed, accounting for more than 40% of the area.

Mr. Duong Kim Hung, Chairman of the People's Committee of Kien Thanh Commune, Tran Yen District, Yen Bai Province, said that to promote organic cinnamon production, the locality has coordinated with specialized companies and units to open training courses, monitor the planting, care and harvesting processes of households in the raw material area, and regularly take samples to promptly detect quality indicators.

With a total cinnamon area of over 81,000 hectares, accounting for 1/3 of the province's planted forest area, Yen Bai is the locality with the highest cinnamon area, output and quality in the country.

Yen Bai cinnamon products are present in nearly 30 countries and territories. Annual output of dry cinnamon bark reaches from 18,000 to 20,000 tons, over 80,000 tons of branches, leaves and over 200,000 m3 of cinnamon wood, generating an income of over 1,000 billion, accounting for nearly 50% of the production value of the forestry sector of Yen Bai province.
