Due to the impact of storm No. 3 (2024), Quang Ninh forestry suffered heavy damage and the province's forest cover decreased by 15% compared to before the storm. In 2025, Quang Ninh will focus on planting over 31,840 hectares, 2.4 times higher than the 2024 forest planting target. In order to improve the quality of planted forests, the agricultural sector has also focused on the supply of forestry seeds early on to serve the province's forest planting and development needs.
In 2025, Hoanh Bo Forestry One Member Co., Ltd. will plant 1,400 hectares of forest to restore production after storm No. 3. Of which, 1,100 hectares are production forests and 300 hectares are protection forests. With a very large planted forest area, 3 times larger than previous years, the amount of seedlings needed this year is more than 3 million trees. Taking advantage of favorable weather for forest planting in the first 6 months of the year, from the end of 2024, the Company has planned to order forestry seedlings from units with production capacity. The Company's nursery is also focusing on production to prepare for this year's forest planting season.
Mr. Nguyen Trung Kien, Deputy Director of Hoanh Bo Forestry One Member Co., Ltd., said: This year, with an area of 1,000 hectares of new forests, the Company needs 3 million seedlings of various types. Meanwhile, the Company's nursery capacity is 1.5 million trees and is implemented by sowing seeds. The remaining seedlings are mainly acacia and eucalyptus, which the Company has signed a contract to order since the end of 2024. Quang Ninh Forestry Science and Production Center 1.1 million trees produced from tissue culture. The amount of ironwood and pine seedlings for planting 300 hectares of protective forest was also ordered by the Company from the Vietnam Forestry Institute and units in Yen Bai. Thus, the seedling stage for this year's forest planting of the unit is basically guaranteed and the source of seedlings is produced by reputable units in the field of forestry seedling production today.
According to calculations by the agricultural sector, the density of forest planting is native trees and large trees ranging from 500 to 1,100 trees/ha. With 31,847ha of concentrated forest planting this year, the whole province needs over 35 million forestry seedlings of all kinds. After reviewing, there are currently 144 nurseries in Quang Ninh, of which 41 have registered for business and the remaining 103 are small, scattered nurseries of households and individuals with a total capacity of producing forestry seedlings of 106.7 million trees/year, including acacia, cinnamon, pine and indigenous tree varieties to serve the needs of forest planting in the province.
Ms. Ngo Thi Nguyet, Deputy Director in charge of the Quang Ninh Center for Forestry Science and Production, said: Compared to the annual forestry seedling production plan, this year the order plan is expected to increase by about 50% because forestry establishments and households in the province suffered heavy damage last year due to storms. Forestry units and households are focusing on rebuilding production, so the demand for seedlings has also increased sharply. The unit focuses all resources on making seedlings from the laboratory until they are brought to the nursery. According to the process, it takes 40 days for acacia seedlings to be produced, and 30 days for eucalyptus, so along with focusing on production, we also reduce all costs to lower prices for farmers compared to current market prices. In 2025, the unit will produce 2.5-3 million seedlings. tissue culture in the laboratory, of which about 1.5 million are brought to the garden. The remaining seedlings are exported to nurseries. Up to now, the Company's nursery has produced 1.5 million forestry seedlings of all kinds.
With the strong increase in demand for forestry seedlings, the source of seedlings produced in the province completely meets the forest planting needs of organizations and individuals in the province. In the first two months of this year, the concentrated forest planting area of the whole province reached 1,256.9 hectares, equal to 3.94% of the plan, including 42.4 hectares of protective forests and 1,214.5 hectares of production forests; of which the area of lim, giổi, and lát forests reached 34.94 hectares.
Mr. Nguyen Van Bong, Deputy Head of the Provincial Forest Protection Department, said: In order to increase the forest coverage rate, the unit has directed the Forest Protection Departments to coordinate with district-level departments and offices, and commune-level People's Committees to strengthen state management of forestry plant varieties; control seedling trading activities that cause sudden and unreasonable price increases, taking advantage of the situation after storm No. 3 to increase demand for seeds and materials for reforestation. At the same time, strictly handle violations in the management of forestry plant varieties (if any) to control the quality of seedlings, serving the forestry development of the province.
