Dak Lak restructures agriculture associated with building prosperous new countryside

In order to promote economic development, Dak Lak province has been actively building new rural areas (NTM) associated with promoting agricultural restructuring. From there, it gradually contributes to improving economic value, increasing income for people, aiming at the goal of developing agriculture and rural areas in a comprehensive, modern and sustainable manner.


"Boost" from restructuring the agricultural sector

Dak Lak has the largest agricultural land area in the country with over 650,000 hectares, of which over 300,000 hectares are fertile red basalt soil. The whole province currently has over 200,000 hectares of coffee, nearly 29,000 hectares of pepper and over 30,000 hectares of durian, the largest in the country; rice is planted on average over 110,000 hectares/year, ranking first in the Central Highlands; corn is over 80,000 hectares, ranking second in the country...; has favorable conditions for livestock development (total livestock and poultry herd over 15 million, always in the top 10 of the country); nearly 42,000 hectares of water surface favorable for inland aquaculture development; temperate climate, favorable weather...

Implementing the restructuring of the agricultural sector towards increasing added value, sustainable development, and linking with the construction of new rural areas, Dak Lak province has identified three breakthroughs. These are the application of high technology; innovation in the form of production organization towards cooperation, association, and development of cooperatives; and attracting enterprises to invest in the production and processing of agricultural products.

To achieve the dual goal of sustainable development of the rural economy and comprehensive and sustainable construction of new rural areas, along with innovation in thinking in agricultural economic production, many farmers, cooperatives, and enterprises in Dak Lak have effectively implemented rural economic models in the new period.

Linking cooperatives with enterprises will be the basis for enhancing the ability to consume agricultural products in the domestic and export markets.

Thanks to changing the production form and linking durian consumption, Phuoc Loi Durian Cooperative in Tan Bac village (Ea Kenh commune, Krong Pac district) has affirmed the quality and improved the product value chain. Currently, members of the Cooperative are linking to produce 15 hectares of durian, including 2 high-quality durian varieties Ri6 and Dona, with an average yield of 30 - 35 tons/ha, and an annual output of nearly 500 tons. With the VietGAP certification, the Cooperative's products are now linked to stable output with prices 10 - 20% higher than conventionally cultivated products.

According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Thao, Head of Phuoc Loi Durian Cooperative, concentrated and synchronized production according to the process helps people improve their farming skills, access and master scientific and technical knowledge. Thereby improving product quality, increasing competitiveness in the market, creating safe products for consumers and protecting health and the environment.

Based on the potential and advantages of existing local conditions, Dak Lak province has focused on attracting investment in developing high-tech agriculture and has initially achieved positive results.

Speaking of high-tech agriculture, circular agriculture invested effectively in Dak Lak, we can mention the 150-hectare South American banana planting project in Ea Rieng commune, M'Drak district of Banana Brothers Farm Company (BBF Company).

The project applies modern technology in production according to the circular farming method, producing products that meet the standards of official banana exports. In addition to the irrigation system, banana transport pulley, and cold storage, BBF Company is using management software to monitor each banana tree.

Up to now, BBF Company's banana products have been stably exploited with an average output of 65 tons/ha/year. From 2022 to present, the company has officially exported bananas to foreign markets with an average output of over 6,500 tons/year.

Towards modern new countryside

The project of agricultural restructuring associated with the construction of new rural areas has really promoted the potential and strengths of agriculture in localities. Mr. Nguyen Hoai Duong, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said that determining agricultural restructuring as one of the levers to improve the criteria of new rural areas, the agricultural sector has advised the province to issue projects to develop industries, fields and products; integrating capital sources from national target programs and socio-economic development programs.

The whole province has promoted restructuring of the agricultural sector towards building high-tech agriculture, large-scale commodity production, developing smart agriculture, circulation, international integration, adapting to climate change, increasing added value and sustainable development, associated with building new rural areas.

Thanks to that, in recent years, Dak Lak agriculture has had positive changes, including developing high-yield, good-quality commodity production, increasing competitiveness, sustainability, and linking with international economic integration.

Up to now, Dak Lak has about 176 agricultural cooperatives that have production and product consumption links with enterprises; about 34 enterprises and 276 farms and family farms have joined the links with enterprises; the number of farmer households participating in the links is about 15,525 households; there are 5 scientific organizations participating in the links.

Sustainable durian production brings high economic value to Dak Lak farmers.

Dak Lak’s agricultural sector has identified three main crop production areas, including coffee, durian and rice. The province’s agricultural products have been exported to 72 countries and territories around the world, especially penetrating major markets such as the US, Japan, UK, France, etc.

As of November 2024, the whole province has 79 communes meeting 19/19 criteria; 5 communes meeting advanced NTM standards; 1/15 district-level units (Buon Ma Thuot City) completing the task of building NTM.

Currently, Dak Lak has recognized 230 OCOP products with 3-4 stars from 144 product owners. Of which, there are 3 potential 5-star products, 42 products with 4 stars and 185 products with 3 stars.

To continue effectively restructuring the agricultural sector in association with building new rural areas and increasing people's income, localities need to focus on directing the implementation of production models, allocating resources to support projects and models for effective production development; and supporting farmers to increase the application and transfer of scientific and technological advances into production.

At the same time, focus on trade promotion activities, building brands for some key agricultural and food products. Support businesses and people in production and business to increase the value of agricultural products and increase people's income.
