On April 1, Vietnam National University, Hanoi coordinated with the Wallonie-Bruxelles delegation in Vietnam, KU Leuven University and Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) to organize a series of academic exchange and networking events.

The events include the workshop “Thirty years of promoting sustainable development through joint research cooperation between Vietnam and the Kingdom of Belgium” (in collaboration with KU Leuven University); High-level academic discussion “How to strengthen academic cooperation, research and innovation cooperation between Belgium and Vietnam?” (in collaboration with the Wallonie-Bruxelles Delegation to Vietnam); Workshop “Digital medicine in the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders: A global perspective” (in collaboration with Vrije Universiteit Brussel).

Vietnam National University, Hanoi, in collaboration with the Wallonie-Brussels Delegation in Vietnam, KU Leuven University and Vrije Universiteit Brussel, organizes a series of academic exchange events.

At the event, Belgian agencies shared information on research funding sources and research cooperation opportunities, and listened to the Ministry of Education and Training's sharing on Project 89, Vietnam's education strategy for the 2019-2030 period, and the potential for training cooperation and student exchange with Belgian partners.

Speaking at the event, Director of Hanoi National University Le Quan said that the series of academic activities and cooperation connections coordinated by Hanoi National University with Belgian partners is an important milestone, looking back at 30 years of successful and fruitful cooperation between the two countries in the fields of science, research and training, and opening up new prospects for cooperation in the future. In particular, the presence of Belgian Ministers and Prime Ministers at the event demonstrates the importance and interest of the Belgian Government in developing educational cooperation with Vietnam.

Over the past years, the cooperative relationship between Vietnam National University, Hanoi and its Belgian partners has been maintained and developed through joint research projects and staff and student exchanges. Many joint research projects between Vietnam National University, Hanoi and its Belgian partners have been successfully implemented, contributing to solving practical problems in the environment, sustainable agriculture, healthcare and community development, resource management, sustainable urban development, sustainable tourism, etc.

"With the joint efforts of all parties, the support of the two governments, and the support from ministries and sectors, the cooperation between Vietnam National University, Hanoi and Belgian partners will continue to develop strongly, bringing practical benefits to both countries, contributing to the sustainable development of the region and the world," emphasized Director of Vietnam National University, Hanoi Le Quan.

KU Leuven University Director Luc Sels expressed that the educational cooperation between Vietnam and Belgium has always been maintained and developed sustainably through research cooperation between universities and research institutes of the two countries. In the context of the world experiencing many fluctuations and increasingly complex challenges such as climate change, public health, sustainable development, increasing energy demand, digital transformation, it is necessary to further develop and expand cooperation in academia.

Mr. Luc Sels commented that the Vietnamese and Belgian organizations have built a typical cooperation model, in which both sides contribute and benefit equally. He emphasized three important pillars that make up the success of this model, including: excellence, ensuring that research meets global standards and is highly competitive; key impact that helps transform research results into practical benefits for communities, businesses and policy makers; social cohesion plays an important role in ensuring that the cooperation brings practical value, is accessible and contributes directly to human development.

Director of the Department of International Cooperation (Ministry of Education and Training) Nguyen Thu Thuy informed the delegates about the Vietnam Education Development Strategy for the period 2019-2030, vision 2045 and Project 89 of the Prime Minister approving the Project on Improving the capacity of lecturers and managers of higher education institutions to meet the requirements of comprehensive fundamental innovation of education and training in the period 2019-2030.

At the same time, she also proposed a number of cooperation orientations with Belgium, including: postgraduate training (master's, doctoral); coordination with the Ministry of Education and Training within the framework of Project 89; cooperation in scientific research and innovation; seeking financial support from international programs; promoting student exchange and cultural exchanges; developing short-term programs; and expanding cooperation with Belgian educational organizations and networks.

Within the framework of the workshop “Thirty years of promoting sustainable development through joint research cooperation between Vietnam and the Kingdom of Belgium”, delegates listened to presentations on typical cooperation projects between scientists from Vietnam National University, Hanoi and Belgian partners.

Some typical projects include: Women's empowerment and the relationship with sustainable tourism in rural Vietnam (Institute of Vietnamese Studies and Development Sciences, Vietnam National University, Hanoi and KU Leuven University); Capacity building of Quy Nhon University to serve the improvement of livelihoods and living conditions of communities in the South Central Coast and Central Highlands of Vietnam towards sustainable development (Quy Nhon University and KU Leuven University)... These projects highlight effective academic cooperation in solving urgent global issues.

The workshop also included discussions on mechanisms and plans to promote and expand research cooperation between Vietnam and Belgium in the future. The implementation of this cooperation will bring many practical benefits, especially in scientific research.

In addition, the two sides will also cooperate in the field of training such as training high-quality human resources through expert and graduate student exchange programs; implementing short-term training courses on advanced technology; transferring knowledge and management experience.

The workshop "Digital Medicine in the Treatment of Neurodegenerative Disorders: A Global Perspective" held in the afternoon of the same day was an important event, marking the close cooperation between Vietnam National University, Hanoi, Vrije Universiteit Brussel and Bach Mai Hospital in the field of digital medicine - a field that is making great strides and holds great promise for the future.
