VnExpressVnExpress21/06/2023

Ho Chi Minh City Fulbright University Vietnam will hold a graduation ceremony for its first 94 bachelors on June 24.

Different from the usual name "Graduation", the ceremony is called "Commencement". Through this, the founding team and lecturers of Fulbright University Vietnam want to convey the message: "Graduation is one of many milestones of maturity, instead of the end of learning. The university's generation of graduates will explore more, constantly pursue and conquer their dreams".

In this first class, 18 students graduated with Honors, 15 with Distinction and many individuals achieved high results in applying for jobs and higher scholarships.

Among them, Ly Minh Tu (Economics) and Phan Canh Minh Phuoc (Computer Science) surpassed hundreds of candidates in the "race" to conquer two global consulting corporations: Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and Bain & Company.

Nguyen Huu Phuc Ngan (major in Psychology and minor in Social Sciences) and Nguyen Thu Huyen (major in Computer Science and minor in Applied Mathematics) respectively received doctoral scholarships in Developmental Psychology at the University of Minnesota (USA) and 100,000 USD for the master's program in Operations Research and Computation at William & Mary (USA).

In addition, Fulbright University Vietnam students have developed many startup ideas that contribute to change and make positive contributions to society. Seesaw - a startup founded in 2021 by Dao Hai Nhat Tan (majoring in Psychology) and a group of students from the same school to research and release game products and services to help take care of mental health in Vietnam. The project successfully called for two billion VND in investment capital on the Shark Tank program.

Nguyen Phung Nhat Khoi (Computer Science major) also convinced the agricultural technology startup Koidra to invest 4.5 million USD to develop a graduation project on technology to teach computers to grow plants. The male student was accepted for a scholarship to the PhD program in Computer Science at the University of Texas at Dallas.

Dr. Dinh Vu Trang Ngan - Director of the Fulbright Bachelor Program said that the school aims to create individuals full of desire and personality, firmly deciding their own path.

"We believe that the past learning journey has built a solid foundation, from which, students can maintain a confident and courageous attitude when facing challenges, be ready to try new things, and create meaningful changes for society," she added.

Fulbright University Vietnam enrolled and opened its first undergraduate class in 2018, a year after the government granted its operating license. Previously, in 2014, the US Congress approved a budget to establish a Vietnamese university based on the US liberal education model.

According to Mr. Thomas J. Vallely - Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Fulbright University Vietnam, if Fulbright were a branch of an American university, the school would quickly become famous. However, in the long term, branch schools tend to become "golden goose" instead of becoming an excellent and influential academic institution in the host country.

"Fulbright must become an educational institution of Vietnam, for Vietnam, with its own intellectual space, with its own teaching staff and independent governance mechanism," Mr. Vallely emphasized.

Accordingly, Fulbright University Vietnam aims to meet the "thirst" for human resources with multidimensional thinking skills in Vietnam. Ms. Dam Bich Thuy - Founding President of Fulbright University Vietnam commented that under the impact of technology, traditional thinking - "learning by pattern, one job for life" is no longer suitable. Therefore, schools need to help students prepare to adapt to changes.

Fulbright University Vietnam builds on the liberal education model and philosophy similar to leading universities in the US. The school provides individuals with a broad knowledge base, the ability to perceive humanistic ethical values, and transferable skills in any environment.

Liberal education is about giving students the ability to access many fields before deciding which one to focus on. "No matter what they choose, students do not have to sacrifice certain habits or passions. A person majoring in computers still has the right to understand music; a person who wants to work in banking does not have to give up their dream to understand psychology," Thuy analyzed.

With this philosophy, Fulbright Vietnam students attend academic classes while also learning to question themselves. The school also aims to encourage learners to ask questions themselves, instead of receiving information one-way.

Through the program here, students can learn how to identify problems and equip themselves with the ability to think of solutions. They not only aim for a university degree, but are also oriented to build a meaningful life with a spirit of service.
