Da Nang calls for investment to innovate waste treatment technology

Da Nang is calling for investment to innovate waste treatment technology, aiming to gradually replace sanitary landfill technology.

Khanh Son landfill in Da Nang is gradually overcoming pollution thanks to investment in the Khanh Son Solid Waste Treatment Complex.

The Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Da Nang City said that currently, the City has been continuing to complete technical infrastructure (by 2030) and continue to study the Solid Waste Treatment Plan in the West of the City towards 2050.

Khanh Son Solid Waste Treatment Complex, through the investment process up to now, is considered a solid waste treatment area with good basic technical infrastructure, collecting and treating all leachate according to standards; ensuring sanitary landfill operation.

In addition, the City is also calling for investment to innovate waste treatment technology (gradually replacing sanitary landfill technology), including: Waste treatment plant with a capacity of 650 tons/day and night (according to the granted Investment Certificate, expected to be put into operation in the third quarter of 2026); City's domestic solid waste treatment plant (CTRSH) with a capacity of 1,000 tons/day and night. After these two plants come into operation, they will basically ensure the treatment of all the City's waste.

Since 2019, the People's Committee of Da Nang City has issued Decision No. 1577/QD-UBND to implement the classification of domestic solid waste at source in the city by 2025.

The method of implementing waste classification at source focuses on 3 groups, including the group of reusable and recyclable solid waste (including 3 types of paper, plastic, and various types of waste metals), this component accounts for about 10-25% of the total solid waste component of the city.

After 5 years of implementation, all wards and communes in the city have organized and implemented the classification of solid waste at source; 96.63% of residential groups classify solid waste at source/total number of residential groups, 93.45% of households classify solid waste at source/total number of households; 91.83% of production, business, service establishments, agencies and organizations classify solid waste/total number of establishments.

According to the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Da Nang City, with the rate of households implementing source classification for groups of solid waste that can be reused and recycled reaching over 93%, equivalent to about 15 - 20% of solid waste in the area being recycled and reused, it will contribute to reducing waste going to landfills.

To improve the efficiency of solid waste collection, classification, transportation and public sanitation in the area, Da Nang has invested in improving the infrastructure of centralized transfer stations with modern technology.

Currently, the City People's Committee has organized the construction and put into operation 2/4 CTRSH Transfer Stations, organized the assessment of the effectiveness of the stations and considered expanding these stations along with the project to renovate clean, civilized collection points... in urban and rural areas.

“The infrastructure is completed and bidding for solid waste collection, transportation and public sanitation services is conducted, creating fair competition; the coordination of environmental sanitation inspection and supervision from districts to wards and communes is promoted; the reception and handling of people's feedback is resolved promptly; the means and equipment for solid waste collection and transportation and public sanitation are mechanized, contributing to freeing up labor, ensuring urban aesthetics and minimizing environmental pollution; the environmental sanitation situation in the city is improved in a positive direction,” said the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Da Nang City.
