My face has recently been breaking out in a lot of acne, especially on my forehead and chin. I want to use makeup to cover it up, but I'm worried that it will damage my skin even more. What should I do? (Huong Ly, 26 years old)

There are four main factors that cause acne: overactive oil glands, follicular keratinocyte proliferation, local inflammatory reactions, and the growth of acne-causing bacteria. You can wear makeup even when you have acne to feel more confident, but you should pay attention to the following because acne-prone skin is very sensitive.
Choose the right cosmetics: Choose oil-free brands to avoid clogging pores and causing more breakouts. Products with benign ingredients, non-comedogenic, non-irritating and fragrance-free are good suggestions.
Wash your face every night: Remove makeup and wash your face before going to bed. Washing your face not only removes makeup but also sweat, dirt, and excess oil. You need to clean your skin before applying acne medication.
Acne treatment: To feel secure when applying makeup, you should see a dermatologist for a skin examination and advice on effective acne treatment methods. Depending on the severity of the acne, there are different treatment methods such as topical medications, oral medications, antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, hormonal treatments, skin peels, light therapy, lasers... Sometimes it is necessary to combine many methods to bring maximum effectiveness.
For mild acne, you can use over-the-counter products to apply at home. However, if your acne does not improve or becomes more severe, you should use prescription acne medications from your doctor. Most acne medications can be used under makeup. You should apply the medication 15-30 minutes before applying makeup.
Avoid wearing makeup too often as it increases the risk of clogged pores. Makeup that stays on your skin for long periods of time during the day creates a favorable environment for bacteria to thrive, which can worsen your acne.
