The Vietnamese Government, with the vision of "5G infrastructure and services are the driving force for digital transformation in the 4th Industrial Revolution", has set specific goals: By 2025, 5G services and smartphones will become popular; by 2030, Vietnam will popularize fiber optic broadband Internet services; and 5G mobile network services will be popularized.

The race to commercialize 5G among carriers

Since 2020, all three network operators Viettel, Vinafone and Mobifone have been testing 5G networks but have not yet commercialized them. This process will only reach its final stage in March 2024 when Viettel and VNPT successfully auction 5G frequencies, while MobiFone will do so in July 2024. According to regulations, the winning bidder must deploy the service within 12 months from the date of licensing and must have at least 3,000 5G broadcasting stations after two years.

The race to commercialize 5G

On October 15, Viettel officially deployed the 5G network in many cities and provinces nationwide. It is known that Viettel's 5G at the time of launch had more than 6,500 BTS stations, covering 100% of the capitals of 63 provinces, cities, tourist areas, industrial parks, seaports, airports, etc.

It is known that Viettel's 5G network speed can be 10 times faster than 4G and the latency is almost zero. This network technology is deployed simultaneously on both 5G NSA and 5G SA architecture platforms.

Viettel has officially launched 19 5G packages for individual users, including 11 prepaid packages and 8 postpaid packages. Monthly fees start from VND135,000 with 4GB of data/day to VND480,000 for prepaid users and from VND200,000 to VND2 million for postpaid.

Each package includes different benefits: in addition to Internet capacity, there are also incentives for domestic and international calls, playing games, accessing social networks or watching TV, and storage.

After Viettel launched the 5G package, Vinaphone also announced a trial program for users in October and November.

Vinaphone said the 5G trial program will take place from October 13 to November 15. If people own a 5G phone, when they pass through an area with signal, they will receive a message inviting them to experience the service. Accordingly, Vinaphone will give away 50 GB of data to use high-speed transmission for 30 days. At the same time, the network also introduced 5G service products to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the network.

It is expected that by the end of 2024, Vinaphone will complete the installation of over 3,000 5G broadcasting stations to ensure strong, stable and continuous coverage, especially in urban areas and major economic centers nationwide.

MobiFone is the latest network operator to join the 5G race, the network operator said it is deploying and ready for commercialization of 5G. It is expected that users will be able to experience 5G services from November.

It is known that at the end of September, Mobifone signed a strategic cooperation agreement with F-Secure Cyber Security Group, marking an important preparation step before officially commercializing 5G.

Thus, these events mark a major step forward in Vietnam's telecommunications sector. After many years of testing, domestic network operators have successfully completed the 5G network infrastructure, ready to provide high-quality services to consumers. With this commercial launch, Vietnam will join the group of pioneering countries in the world in widely deploying 5G networks.

It is predicted that when Vinaphone and MobiFone officially join the race, 5G prices will likely fluctuate and become more competitive.

Thus, after two major carriers join the race, the number of BTS stations will increase, causing the density of stations to increase, creating favorable conditions for 5G waves to operate well, helping to improve user experience.

5G will drive digital transformation

Experts say that the deployment of 5G services is a positive factor in promoting the national digital transformation process, an important factor in promoting the digital economy, providing a platform for businesses and organizations to apply digital technology; at the same time helping to improve the quality of human life.

The development of 5G will accelerate the integration, application and commercialization of high and new technologies, thereby creating many new businesses and new business models.

Promoting the development of 5G will accelerate digital transformation in traditional industries, strongly promoting the transformation from management to production methods, helping to increase value and competitive advantages for traditional industries.

The development of 5G will also promote the rapid development of essential services such as telemedicine and online education, and improve the quantity and quality of public service delivery.

According to the plan to improve the quality of mobile telecommunications in our country by 2025 approved by the Ministry of Information and Communications, the goal is clearly stated: Effectively deploy 5G commercialization with 100% of provinces and cities having 5G service waves. 100% of high-tech parks, concentrated information technology parks, research and development centers, innovation centers, industrial parks, stations, seaports, and international airports having 5G service waves.

Mr. Tao Duc Thang - Chairman and General Director of Viettel Group said: Viettel has started researching and testing 5G technology early when 4G service was at its peak and successfully connected the first 5G call in May 2019 with a speed equivalent to the 5G network in the world. Viettel is also the first network operator to test 5G in 63 cities and provinces nationwide. The launch of 5G service on October 15 marked a development step in the process of pioneering and breaking through in mobile in Vietnam.

A representative of the Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) shared: the launch of 5G service is a major focus of VNPT in 2024. When officially launched, Vinaphone's 5G will be available in 63/63 provinces and cities and will quickly expand nationwide. Vinaphone's 5G network is both aimed at individual customers and prioritizes deployment in key economic zones and industrial parks to serve the needs of smart manufacturing, automation as well as the Internet of Things. The deployment of 5G will improve the quality of services currently provided, offering new services with outstanding experiences by maximizing the real capabilities of 5G, thereby helping VNPT have new sources of revenue.

According to a representative of Mobifone Telecommunications Corporation, the company is ready for commercialization in November 2024. To enhance the effective deployment of the 5G network, Mobifone has cooperated with network operators with the same service frequency and with foreign enterprises to exchange experiences, innovate, and ensure network security in the internet environment. Mobifone will strive to best meet the needs of customers in the digital economy and digital lifestyle.
