Ms. Harris was considered to have performed better than Mr. Trump in the debate on the evening of September 10 (US time), but winning the debate does not mean winning the election.

Polls nationwide and in swing states in recent days have shown the race for the White House is in a tight spot, making the televised debate on September 10 one of the most anticipated in American political history.
Trump - Harris debate highlights
In the first debate that lasted more than 100 minutes in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris debated notable issues such as the economy, immigration, and even Mr. Trump's legal troubles...
Ms. Harris was described as putting her opponent on the defensive when launching attacks during the heated debate, according to Reuters News Agency.
One of the highlights of the debate was that Ms. Harris started the debate by surprising Mr. Trump, proactively approaching to shake his hand on the debate stage. AFP news agency commented that this Democratic candidate then maintained the upper hand.
In a performance that earned the endorsement of pop superstar Taylor Swift , Ms Harris drew an angry response from Mr Trump as she launched attacks on issues ranging from abortion to democracy and foreign policy.
Trump repeatedly raised his voice when responding to Ms. Harris on immigration and the economy, blaming the Democratic candidate for the so-called failures of President Joe Biden's administration. In response, Ms. Harris said she represented a new beginning after the "chaos" of Donald Trump's presidency and declared "we will not go back" to that era.
Another jarring clash came as Mr Trump continued to refuse to accept his loss to Mr Biden in the 2020 presidential election. Ms Harris responded by mocking Mr Trump, saying he was “fired by 81 million people” and calling him a threat to democracy.
The two candidates also clashed on foreign policy. Harris told Trump that Russian President Vladimir Putin would “beat him” when it came to the war in Ukraine and that world leaders were “laughing” at him. Trump responded by accusing Harris of being weak on the Gaza war, saying she “hates Israel.”
Harris, after five days of careful debate preparation, repeatedly provoked Trump, provoking the Republican candidate to react angrily. Trump also attacked Harris on immigration, but Harris sought to unnerve the Republican candidate on the issue that should have been his winning strength.
Race track undecided
With less than two months to go until Election Day on November 5, Ms. Harris is under pressure to present herself to tens of millions of voters, to let them know more about her, after the vice president unexpectedly replaced Mr. Biden as the Democratic presidential candidate. She has been criticized in the past for not showing a clear political identity this election season.
Snap polls and commentators said Ms. Harris won the debate, and her campaign quickly challenged Mr. Trump to a second debate in October.
However, winning the debate does not mean winning the election. CNN commented that although Ms. Harris performed better than Mr. Trump in the debate on September 10, "there is no guarantee that it will shape the election."
It typically takes days or weeks for a presidential debate to sink in with voters and leave a lasting impression. In the past, candidates who win on the debate stage have not always gone on to win the election. Both Trump in 2016 and President George W. Bush in 2004 were widely expected to lose the debates, but they ended up winning the election.
And while Democrats were buoyed by Harris’s performance, partisans often judge a debate based on their own political preferences. Even if Trump loses the debate, he still has the advantage on two of the top issues of the election: the economy and immigration.
With many voters still waiting for the benefits of the US economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, any debate now is unlikely to be a deciding factor in their votes. And Mr. Trump’s messages on immigration and crime remain powerful with many voters.
Three against one?
Trump said the debate, hosted by ABC News in Philadelphia, was his "best debate" to date, and accused the moderator of bias. "I think it was my best debate ever, especially when you're three against one," Trump tweeted. The Associated Press noted that ABC News hosts David Muir and Linsey Davis fact-checked Trump's remarks and corrected the former president four times on the evening of September 10, which angered his supporters.Tuoitre.vn
