Cuba awards medal to National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue

The President of the Cuban National Assembly awarded the Carlos Manuel De Cespedes Medal to honor the contributions of National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue to the relationship between the two countries.

National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue and Cuban National Assembly Chairman Esteban Lazo Hernandez today attended a ceremony to present Cuban state medals to leaders, former leaders of the Vietnamese National Assembly and agencies of the National Assembly.

"The undying relationship between Vietnam and Cuba is an example of the brotherly solidarity between two nations bound together by friendship, affection and mutual admiration. Our two countries share a history of relentless fighting," said Mr. Hernandez.

When presenting the Carlos Manuel De Cespedes Medal to National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue, Mr. Hernandez emphasized that this is "a noble medal named after the father of the Cuban nation who initiated the movements to fight for independence".

"Comrade Vuong Dinh Hue has contributed to and strengthened the exemplary brotherly relationship, solidarity and cooperation between Cuba and Vietnam," said Mr. Hernandez, mentioning that in April, Mr. Vuong Dinh Hue became the first foreign leader to speak before the Cuban parliament.

Mr. Hernandez presented the Ana Betancour Medal, named after a Cuban patriot, to former Chairwoman of the National Assembly Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan. He mentioned that Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan led a high-ranking delegation to attend the funeral of leader Fidel Castro in 2016.

The President of the Cuban National Assembly also awarded the Order of Solidarity and the Order of Friendship to several other current and former parliamentary officials during the event.

Before the medal award ceremony, National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue hosted a meeting with Mr. Hernandez at the National Assembly House. Mr. Hernandez emphasized that Cuba considers promoting economic, trade and investment relations with Vietnam to be of strategic significance. Vietnamese enterprises are leading investors in the Asia and Oceania regions in Cuba. Cuba looks forward to welcoming Vietnamese business delegations to visit and explore investment opportunities.

National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue said that Vietnam will continue to support and ensure food security for Cuba, and suggested that both sides promote their potential, identify key areas of cooperation, promote cooperation, joint ventures and investment in accordance with the needs, conditions and capacity of each country. He also suggested that Cuba pay attention to and remove obstacles and difficulties, creating conditions for Vietnamese enterprises to invest with confidence.

Earlier, on the afternoon of September 27, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong received the President of the Cuban National Assembly at the Party Central Committee Headquarters. The General Secretary affirmed that Vietnam always attaches importance to, preserves and is determined to deepen the Vietnam-Cuba Special Traditional Solidarity and Comprehensive Cooperation relationship, affirming the consistent stance of always being united and supporting Cuba, opposing and calling for an end to the policy of blockade and embargo against Cuba.

National Assembly Chairman Hernandez thanked Vietnam and Cuba for their multifaceted cooperation, from exchanging experiences to transferring technology, sending experts, and providing timely rice support in the context of Cuba facing many difficulties.

The President of the Cuban National Assembly visited Vietnam from September 24-28 at the invitation of the leaders of the Vietnamese Party and State. He attended the ceremony commemorating the 50th anniversary of leader Fidel Castro's visit to the liberated zone of southern Vietnam in September 1973.

On September 26, National Assembly Chairman Hernandez walked across Hien Luong Bridge, visited the flagpole of the parallel on the northern bank of Ben Hai River and the headquarters of the Provisional Revolutionary Government of South Vietnam in Cam Lo district, Quang Tri province.

Vietnam and Cuba established diplomatic relations on December 2, 1960, two years after the success of the Cuban Revolution. Vietnam has supported Cuba in developing household-scale rice production, corn and soybean production, and aquaculture. Cuba imports about 300,000 - 400,000 tons of rice from Vietnam each year.
