Recently, the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology, Quang Ninh General Hospital successfully performed an artificial hip replacement for a 107-year-old woman, thereby affirming the capacity and qualifications of the hospital's medical team when performing surgery on cases at this "rare" age.
This is the oldest patient ever to have surgery here.

The patient is Mrs. Tran Thi Ch. (107 years old), residing in Duong Huy ward, Cam Pha city. According to her family, 2 months ago, Mrs. Ch. fell and hit her buttocks on a hard surface. After the accident, her right hip movement was limited.
Seeing that the old man was old and weak, after being examined at the local health facility, the family decided to take him home to take care of him. However, his condition became more and more serious, his right thigh was swollen and painful, he lost mobility, and he was dependent on his children for daily activities.
The family took him to the Provincial General Hospital for examination. After examination and x-ray, the doctors diagnosed that Mr. Ch. had a fractured right femur and was scheduled for surgery to replace the artificial hip joint.
Recognizing that this is a rare elderly patient with a high risk of complications during and after surgery, the doctors of the Orthopedic Trauma Department conducted a consultation between the Cardiology, Intensive Care, and Anesthesia departments to screen for all associated diseases, prevent thrombosis, and predict risks in advance to have the safest surgical plan for the patient.
Dr. Pham Trung Duc, Deputy Head of the Department of Anesthesia and Resuscitation, and other doctors in the department performed spinal anesthesia on the patient.
“Mr. Ch. is 107 years old this year. At his advanced age, with his weak physical condition, poor heart and lung function, and reduced respiratory function, we decided not to use endotracheal anesthesia but to perform spinal anesthesia to limit the risk of complications.
The spinal anesthesia process was difficult due to the patient's old age and the spinal anatomy, which was curved and deformed compared to normal. With many years of experience, the anesthesia team ensured a good and safe anesthesia method as well as closely monitored the patient's vital signs during the surgery so that the surgeon could confidently handle the injury," said Dr. Duc.
The surgical team led by Dr. Luong Toan Thang - Head of Orthopedic Trauma Department, along with other doctors in the department, made an incision to expose the fracture of the right femoral neck and removed the femoral head.
Continue cleaning the joint socket, installing the artificial head and shaft, adjusting and checking for good hip joint movement, no dislocation.
The 1-hour surgery went smoothly, the patient did not lose much blood and was fully conscious. After the surgery, the 107-year-old man's health was stable, the surgical wound was dry, he was able to sit up and was ready to be discharged.
Mrs. Ch.'s daughter excitedly shared: "At first, the family was hesitant because they saw that their mother was old and weak, because they were afraid that she would not survive.
After listening to the doctors' careful and detailed advice and encouragement, we had great confidence in the surgery.
Now seeing her healthy, alert, sleeping well, and her leg pain is much less than before the surgery, the family is very happy. Thank you very much to the medical team for helping my mother to be like this now so that she can soon gather with her children, grandchildren, and family."
Directly performing surgery for Mr. Ch., Doctor CKII Luong Toan Thang - Head of Orthopedic Trauma Department, Quang Ninh General Hospital said: "Performing hip replacement surgery for a 107-year-old patient is a challenge with many risks of complications.
However, if surgery is not performed due to old age, the patient will definitely only be able to lie in one place and endure the pain all day long. The family will need someone to take care of them 24/7. Lying down for a long time will also cause pressure ulcers, stagnant pneumonia, and the body will gradually become exhausted, leading to a high risk of death.
So even though Mr. Ch. was 107 years old, we still decided to perform hip replacement surgery on the patient.
This is extremely necessary, helping elderly patients to be healthy and happy and return to normal life.
In addition to the technical requirements of surgery, psychological factors in the elderly are also extremely important.
The patient was given spinal anesthesia so he was completely awake throughout the surgery. The surgical team performed the surgery professionally and talked to encourage him so that he could go through the surgery in the most comfortable and happy state of mind.
The hip replacement surgery at the hospital for the oldest woman ever was successful. Previously, Quang Ninh General Hospital also performed surgery on a 102-year-old woman with unexpected recovery results.
Femoral neck fracture is a common accident in the elderly, mainly due to slipping on hard surfaces, falling and hitting the hip on the ground.
Hip replacement surgery is currently the optimal treatment for femoral neck fractures due to trauma, helping to restore motor function.
This is a difficult technique, mainly performed in large hospitals with experienced surgeons and modern equipment.
