Changing the mindset of using traditional medicine

Nowadays, many countries use Traditional Medicine (TM) in disease prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and health improvement. Vietnam has a long-standing traditional medicine system, and the prospect of using TM in the country is very large.

However, using traditional oriental medicine has many disadvantages:

Firstly, due to the hot and humid climate of our country, it is very difficult to preserve medicinal herbs, leading to a decrease in the quality of medicinal herbs.

Second, traditional decoction is a laborious and time-consuming method. At the same time, if the patient does not decoct according to the instructions on technique and time, it can reduce the effectiveness of the treatment.

Third, the resulting medicine often has an unpleasant smell and taste, and each time it is used, a large volume of medicine is often used, causing difficulty for the patient.

According to Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Van Thinh (Deputy Head of Pharmacy Faculty, Hanoi University of Business and Technology), all of the above disadvantages of traditional medicine have been resolved by modernizing traditional medicine by applying new technology.

Modernized extraction of medicinal herbs helps the active ingredients in the herbs not to be denatured as when boiled with water. Especially when produced in a high-tech factory, the quality of input medicinal herbs will be controlled very well and consistently. Only with good input testing quality can good products be produced, ” said Mr. Thinh.

Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Van Thinh highly appreciated the modernization of traditional medicine by applying new technology.

He said that thanks to the application of new technology, users of traditional medicine no longer have to laboriously prepare and carry the medicine around as before. Instead, medicinal herbs are processed, extracted, and sprayed in a soluble form, improving preservation and extending the time of use.

In fact, countries with developed traditional medicine such as China, Japan... have used the medicinal granules in traditional medicine hospitals instead of the usual decoction for many years because of its effectiveness and convenience. The medicinal granules cover up unpleasant odors and flavors, are divided into packages with precise dosages, and are conveniently packaged so users can take them with them wherever they go, ” said Mr. Thinh.

High-tech processing factory, strict inspection process

According to Mr. Thinh, in Vietnam there are high-tech processing factories that meet GMP - WHO standards, ensuring consistent product quality, typically the factory in Phu Tho of Vietnam Pharmaceutical Joint Stock Company (Vietmec).

Vietmec Traditional Medicine Factory has been certified with GMP - WHO (Good Manufacturing Practices according to World Health Organization standards), GMP - HS (Good Manufacturing Practices for Health Protection Foods), GSP - WHO (Good Storage Practices for Medicines) standard storage warehouse; ISO 17025 certified laboratory, GLP - WHO (Laboratory Quality Safety System) certified laboratory.

This is one of the pioneering factories in Vietnam, specializing in processing and preparing medicinal herbs into traditional medicine, extracting and concentrating at reduced pressure, spray drying on a system integrating modern equipment and the most advanced technological processes to create nearly 300 types of soluble powders of traditional medicine and medicinal herbs.

The advantage of this medicinal mist powder is that it is very convenient to use, does not require decoction even in the family or hospital, the quality is standardized, very stable and the treatment is effective. The preservation time is long, at least 3 years or more.

Vietmec invests in modern production lines, strictly following the standard process from the Ministry of Health in producing products derived from medicinal herbs with large production capacity, stable and consistent quality.

Input medicinal materials for processing into traditional medicine are strictly controlled for all qualitative and quantitative indicators, active ingredients, microbiological standards, heavy metals, pesticide residues, etc. to ensure that they meet standards before being put into the extraction and spray drying line. After completing the line, the output products, which are dried medicinal extracts, continue to be strictly inspected for quality, ensuring strict standards according to regulations of the Ministry of Health.

Modernizing traditional medicine by applying new technology to ensure quality standards as well as diversifying products along with expanding scale and developing medicinal herb growing areas... in a systematic manner will help Vietnam participate and compete with the global medicinal herb market. It can be said that the application and development of medicinal herbs in the care and protection of human health in Vietnam will be an inevitable direction in the future ,” Mr. Thinh commented.
