Perhaps, there has rarely been a time when the domestic entertainment market has been as bustling as it has been in the past year. In the summer of 2024, two Brother programs featuring more than 60 male artists were released, creating a lasting fever on television and social media platforms.
Not stopping there, the influence of Anh trai travails and Anh trai "say hi" has reached far beyond the framework of a reality game show. Six months after the two shows ended, concerts with tens of thousands of audiences were continuously held, becoming an unprecedented phenomenon.
Even the concert series of Anh trai vu ngan cong gai and Anh trai "say hi" will likely continue to take place this year. According to experts, this is an extremely positive signal for the domestic music market. However, the brothers also need to constantly renew themselves through each performance, to avoid disappointing quality.
What do you see from the prolonged heat of the brother concert series?
After 9 concert nights divided equally between the two shows, it's easy to see that "Say Hi" Brother and "Overcoming Thousands of Challenges" bring two relatively different styles.
"Say Hi" Brother has a similar color to K-pop concerts, making the most of trending songs and having many details aimed at the audience. The performances are full of entertainment, with vibrant performances, lots of choreography and eye-catching stage effects. With "Say Hi Brother", besides emphasizing the entertainment factor, the program also tries to recreate traditional values, harmoniously combining folk materials with contemporary music.
Both programs are invested on a large scale, but the implementation method is also different. "Say Hi" Brother focuses on performance, each performance has the support of a large team of dancers. Meanwhile, "Anh Trai Vuon Ngan Cong Gai" focuses on storytelling, strong in concept with staging parts serving the content of the song.
Despite their differences, the common point is that both programs have achieved unimaginable success. In just 6 months, nearly a dozen concerts of the brothers have been held from North to South. Not to mention, both have also become the topic of discussion on social networks for a long time, maintaining the top trending position for over a year.
Previously, Vietnamese artists rarely held consecutive concerts because of the high financial risk and the market was not strong enough to maintain many consecutive shows. Many people had difficulty selling tickets, for example, Ha Tran had to postpone the project. Pure galaxy 30th anniversary of career, or a series of concerts combining Vietnamese and Korean artists were also canceled at the last minute.
However, "Say Hi" Brother has reached its 5th concert, while "Overcoming Thousands of Challenges" has just completed its 3rd and 4th concerts. With revenue of hundreds of billions of VND per concert, these concerts not only show that Vietnamese audiences are now willing to spend money on quality entertainment experiences, but also raise the standards of organizing concerts in the domestic market, following the development direction of major entertainment industries such as Japan and Korea.
With the continued reception from the audience, it is likely that the concert series of the brothers will continue to take place many nights this year. However, in recent concerts, Anh trai vu ngan cong gai and Anh trai “say hi” have not had many differences compared to previous concerts.
Both shows attempted to make some changes to their setlists, staging, and stage effects, but these adjustments were not so drastic as to create a noticeable freshness. This raises the question of when is the right time to end the brothers' journey.
When to stop?
When concerts are held continuously, the pressure to stay healthy, maintain form throughout the performances and renew themselves is not small.
Share with Tri Thuc - Znews , Isaac said that although he was very happy to perform many nights in a row, he also faced a lot of pressure. During the preparation for each performance, Isaac faced many physical and mental challenges.
“For me, having to constantly innovate, be creative and bring new experiences to the audience is a big challenge. Fitness is always an important factor, because I have to practice many hours with my brothers to ensure I can perform all night. Sometimes I feel stressed, but having a support team, as well as the support of fans helps me overcome those challenges.”
Similarly, talented artist Do Hoang Hiep also said that not only he but also other artists in the program Anh trai vu ngan cong gai also face health pressures and the need to renew themselves.
“If we only talk about two shows, we cannot fully describe the hard work and difficulties of the artists and the organizers. We had to spend a lot of time preparing. Not to mention, with the recent hot weather in Ho Chi Minh City, dehydration and fatigue were inevitable. Thanks to the thorough preparation from the organizers, plus the excitement of performing soon, I always have an abundant source of energy,” Do Hoang Hiep told Knowledge - Znews .
Not only Vietnamese artists, but also experienced international stars have encountered similar problems when performing consecutive concerts. In 2022, the Born Pink tour received mixed reviews. BlackPink was criticized for having inconsistent performance in each concert. Not to mention, the Born Pink tour was also criticized for performing the same thing, without much variation between nights.
The tight schedule and high work intensity (2 days/show) are said to have affected the quality of BlackPink's shows. At the concert in Hamilton, Jennie collapsed in pain while performing, revealing a wound on her leg. Many viewers shared the moment Rosé showed signs of an IV, Lisa collapsed when the lights went out. In particular, the image of Jisoo with swollen lymph nodes in her neck was widely spread, making fans worried.
In fact, a series of concerts lasting multiple nights is not uncommon in the international music market. The world's top superstars such as Taylor Swift, BTS... often organize global tours lasting from several months to more than a year, with each major venue being able to perform multiple nights. Taylor Swift with The Eras tour (2023-2024) performed 6 consecutive nights in Los Angeles, 3-4 nights in many major cities. Meanwhile, BTS also performed 2 consecutive nights at Wembley Stadium (UK).
Returning to Vietnam, the artists of the two shows shared with Knowledge - Znews all affirmed that despite the pressure, they still wanted to continue the shows. According to expert Le Hoang Quang - director of TechBeat Music , whether to stop or continue is not the most important question, but how to organize in the future.
“If artists maintain their form, have new music products and are creative enough to refresh the experience for the audience, then continuing to hold concerts is reasonable,” he said.
In addition, Le Hoang Quang also said that in the entertainment industry, it is impossible to exclude the element of business strategy to optimize revenue when artists or programs are at the peak of their appeal. However, if we only focus on revenue without paying attention to the audience experience, it is easy to lead to a rapid decline.
“When organizing dozens of nights, the issue is not only about the attraction of the artists but also the ability to maintain the freshness and quality of the program. If signs of saturation appear (tickets are harder to sell, feedback is less positive), it is necessary to pause and build a new strategy for the next stage,” the expert emphasized.
