The first visit to Vietnam by Chinese General Secretary and President Xi Jinping in six years will contribute to strengthening political trust and promoting mutually beneficial cooperation. The visit will strengthen the ties between the two peoples, creating momentum to open a new stage and new heights in bilateral relations.

Over the years, the two countries have witnessed high-level exchanges and breakthroughs in substantive cooperation. At the same time, the relationship has received increasingly deep public support. The special bond of “comradeship and brotherhood” has brought benefits to the people of the two countries, contributing to peace and development in the region and the world. This special friendship has been clearly demonstrated in foreign policy, with bilateral relations between the two countries playing a priority role.

The leaders of the two sides have also cultivated strong political trust and deep comradeship to chart the path for the development of bilateral relations, with important strategic indicators.

In October, General Secretary and President of China Xi Jinping met with President Vo Van Thuong on the occasion of the Vietnamese leaders' attendance at the 3rd Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation. A year ago, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam Nguyen Phu Trong was the first foreign leader to visit China after the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and was personally awarded the Friendship Medal of the People's Republic of China by General Secretary and President of China Xi Jinping.

Previously, in 2017, the leaders of the two countries also visited each other, with Vietnam being the destination of President Xi Jinping's first overseas trip after the 19th Congress. Also during this visit, the two sides signed a memorandum of understanding on jointly implementing the Belt and Road Initiative initiated by China and the "Two Corridors, One Economic Belt" plan, leading to a series of important projects, improving people's lives.

For example, Vietnam’s first elevated railway project. The 13km Cat Linh-Ha Dong elevated railway line with 12 stations, covering three districts of Hanoi, has provided a convenient and comfortable transportation solution for people in a crowded city with millions of motorbikes and cars. The railway line, built by China and operated by Vietnam, has demonstrated practical cooperation between the two countries.

This year, bilateral cooperation is reaching new heights as the two countries celebrate the 15th anniversary of the establishment of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. China has remained Vietnam’s largest trading partner for many years. Vietnam is China’s largest trading partner in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

After Vietnamese durian was officially introduced to the Chinese market last year, exports of various fruits and vegetables to China have grown significantly this year. Of which, durian export turnover is expected to reach 1 billion USD.

On the other hand, in the first nine months of this year, China’s investment in Vietnam continued to increase, ranking second among the countries with the largest investment in Vietnam. Exchange activities have also recovered and are expected to increase as more flights resume.

Notably, the connection and mutual understanding between the people of the two countries are increasingly consolidated and enhanced through the widespread popularity of Chinese films and television series among Vietnamese audiences. More and more Chinese tourists choose Vietnam as their destination. In the opposite direction, more and more Vietnamese students choose China to study and work.

Both China and Vietnam regard the development of their countries as an opportunity for their own development. The prospects for the two neighbors to cooperate, follow the path of socialism and promote bilateral relations are still wide open. The two neighbors should actively promote mutually beneficial cooperation at sea, accelerate consultations on the Code of Conduct in the South China Sea, and turn this region into a sea of peace and cooperation.

In early December, co-chairing the 15th meeting of the Steering Committee for Bilateral Cooperation in Hanoi, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that the two sides should view the relationship from a strategic perspective to promote human progress and strengthen the power of socialism.

Speaking at a reception for Mr. Vuong Nghi, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong said that a banyan tree symbolizing friendship had been planted at the Friendship Pass in the border area between the two countries. The General Secretary emphasized that in the world, there is only one Vietnamese border gate named Friendship - this highlights the friendship and tradition between the two countries.

In the context of the world undergoing rapid changes, unprecedented in a century, socialist countries like China and Vietnam, based on their national conditions and the trend of the times, have successfully found their own paths of modernization. With common aspirations and joint efforts, the ship of China-Vietnam friendship will certainly continue to "ride the wind and tread the waves" to move forward, for the benefit of the people of the two countries.
