Artist Thanh Thanh Hien's daughter transforms into 'Thi No'

Singer Thanh Thanh Hien plays the role of Thi No in Vietnam's first Broadway musical called "Giac Mao Cha Phao".

The Dream of Chi Pheo is a musical inspired by the short story Chi Pheo by writer Nam Cao, telling about Chi Pheo's fierce struggle with the tragedy of fate.

Chi Pheo's origin and appearance closely follow the original literary work. However, Chi Pheo's Dream is not heavily psychological and does not delve into describing the reality of life of the people in feudal society, but focuses on the romantic element in the couple story of Chi Pheo and Thi No.

Singer Dong Hong plays the role of Chi Pheo, and singer Hoang Thai Phuong plays the role of Thi No. Many famous singers also participate in the musical, such as Meritorious Artist Khanh Hoa, singer Hoang Bach, singer Dinh Quang Dat, etc.

The creative team includes musician Duong Cam, screenwriter Dinh Tien Dung, director - Meritorious Artist Phung Tien Minh, People's Artist Tan Minh - Director of Thang Long Music and Dance Theater.

Screenwriter Dinh Tien Dung said that the world has many musicals about love, typically Romeo and Juliet. However, the love story of rich people who cannot be together does not give him as much emotion as the story of Thi No - Chi Pheo.

"The story of Chi Pheo is meaningful because it honors love and human values. Thanks to love, a demon can become human, a silly girl can also become a human," said screenwriter Dinh Tien Dung.

He confided: " Sometimes there are things in life that just wishing for 'normal' is happiness. When we go to the doctor, just needing the doctor to write the two words 'normal' makes us feel relieved. Therefore, in the play, we keep repeating the phrase 'We want to be normal people' to emphasize one thing: being normal is something very difficult, many people wish for it."

Dinh Tien Dung also said that when he made the musical, he made changes to the story to make it more positive.

"Nam Cao wrote the work Chi Pheo in the context of that social period. When staging this play, I wanted to break the loop that Nam Cao built in his story, for the fate of the characters in that story. I wanted that loop to stop, to make the story brighter" - Dinh Tien Dung said.

Musician Duong Cam affirmed that Giac Mo Chi Pheo is a musical staged in standard Broadway style. When he received the script from Dinh Tien Dung, he composed the music in 5 days.

Duong Cam said that in the world, famous musicals inspired and adapted from classic literary works are well received. Examples include: Les Miserables, Countess Mariza... He hopes that The Dream of Chi Pheo will become a Vietnamese musical brand: " I want to recreate a literary spirit through a humanistic perspective, through music to express a 'normal and kind' Chi Pheo. Honoring the value of sincere human love even if it is crushed by fate, in all circumstances, love is always salvation".

When looking for actors for the musical, Duong Cam was "crazy happy" to meet Hoang Thai Phuong. He commented that the voice of artist Thanh Thanh Hien's daughter had innocence and a bit of "craziness" - inherited from her parents. Therefore, Hoang Thai Phuong was immediately cast in the role of Thi No.

Taking on the role of artistic director, People's Artist Tan Minh said he was very happy that the day has finally come when the musical "Chi Pheo's Dream" will be brought to the public.

"We have been planning this project for 3-4 years, but for many reasons, including the COVID-19 pandemic, it was not until this year that the musical could reach the audience," said People's Artist Tan Minh, adding that he was very happy to have dedicated and talented collaborators such as Duong Cam, Dinh Tien Dung, and Phung Tien Minh.

Recently, at the 2024 National Music and Dance Festival, the musical The Dream of Chi Pheo "won big" with many categories, including the Outstanding Award for the musical.

The musical The Dream of Chi Pheo will be performed on December 23 at the Ho Guom Theater.
