All Coca-Cola products, including the company's signature brands, have been recalled in Europe due to high levels of chlorate posing a potential health risk.
On January 27, Coca-Cola's European bottling unit confirmed that it had requested a recall of all Coca-Cola (or Coke), Sprite and other drinks after discovering high levels of chlorate, posing a potential health risk.
Coca-Cola Europacific Partners Belgium told AFP news agency that cans and glass bottles containing high concentrations of chlorate had been distributed in Belgium, the Netherlands, Britain, Germany, France and Luxembourg since November.
"We don't have exact numbers, but it's clear the number of drinks involved is quite large," the company admitted when asked about the number of products recalled.
Chlorates can be found in foods because they are derived from chlorine disinfectants that are widely used in water treatment and food processing.
In a 2015 scientific opinion, the European Food Safety Authority said that long-term exposure to chlorate may pose a health concern for children, particularly those with mild or moderate iodine deficiency.
"The majority of affected and unsold products have been removed from shelves. We are continuing to take measures to remove all remaining products from the market," Coca-Cola Europacific Partners Belgium said.
Coca-Cola's French arm said analysis by independent experts "concluded that the likelihood of a related risk" was "very low".
"We have not received any complaints from consumers about this issue," said Coca-Cola Company in France.
The affected Coke and Fuze Tea shipments were delivered in France but the recall does not currently apply to the French market.
Affected production codes
Coca-Cola Europacific Partners has apologised for the recall and said the incident was discovered during a routine inspection at its production facility in Ghent, Belgium.
Affected products have production codes 328 GE through 338 GE and include the Minute Maid, Nalu, Royal Bliss and Tropico brands, the company said.
“We are in contact with the relevant authorities in each affected market,” the company added.
