A woman in South Africa has suffered serious burns to her face after a failed laser hair removal procedure.

Thobe Moyo, a graduate of the University of Cape Town, South Africa, started growing facial hair when she hit puberty at the age of 18. She was diagnosed with PCOS, a condition that causes irregular menstrual cycles and excessive hair growth.

“I hated shaving,” says Thobe. “I had to shave every day before I knew about other treatments.

After graduating from college, a friend introduced her to laser hair removal, and the results exceeded her expectations to the point where she no longer had to shave her face every day.

However, the most recent incident at a new beauty salon changed everything.

Thobe said she booked a laser facial hair removal service. When she arrived, the staff told her that her skin might be a little red after the hair removal and that she needed to apply a cold compress.

“Everything seemed normal. They took information and explained everything. However, within a few minutes I felt dizzy and my skin felt like it was on fire,” she said.

She said she expressed her concerns but was reassured by staff that the feeling was normal. After a while, the pain went away. But when she looked in the mirror, Thobe was shocked to see the lower half of her face covered in dark rectangular marks, resembling a checkerboard.

“I was shocked. I knew my skin was burned. However, the salon completely ignored me and asked when my next appointment would be,” she said.

The salon staff assured Thobe that she would just need to apply cold compresses and take care of herself. However, a month later, her skin was still marked with dark rectangular burns that were still scabbed over. She had to cover her face with a scarf for a month, and suffered from insomnia due to the pain and anxiety. Thobe also said she was too self-conscious to go swimming or meet friends.

After Thobe spoke out, the beauty salon also apologized and compensated her with a jar of aloe vera, which she said could not compensate for the damage caused to her.

Earlier in October, a woman from Clonkeen Grove, Deansgrange, Glenageary, Dublin, Ireland, sued after suffering multiple burns during a laser hair removal treatment at a beauty salon, leaving her legs looking like “a leopard.”

Naomi Kumar, 29, said she was left with thousands of blisters on her legs after treatment at the Therapie clinic, in Molesworth Street, Dublin, Ireland. The burns then turned to scabs over a few weeks and left her looking “really like a leopard.”

Naomi Kumar, 29, sued the owners and operators of the Therapie Clinic. Kumar said she was a Zumba instructor at the time of the incident. She booked laser therapy sessions at a cost of €1,100.

However, when the doctor started treating her right shin, she began to feel terrible pain. Her right shin immediately broke out in purple-red spots.

But instead of admitting any mistake, the therapist said Kumar was fine and simply had a “low pain threshold.” The doctor didn’t stop working and instead moved on to his left leg.

The same thing happened to Kumar’s left leg. “I was sweating and wincing after each laser session. It was horrible,” she said.

She still remembers the shock when it was all over, taking off her goggles and looking down at her feet, which were covered in blisters. The salon still took her money and invited her back for more services. Kumar said she even had to postpone her French exam because she threw up on the way to class.

The severe pain continued for the next three months. She could not even get dressed and could only stay at home. The after-effects continued as three years later, she suffered from severe pain from her hips to her ankles. The case is currently under review in court.
