Vinh Nguyen dribbles the ball in the match against Viettel The Cong Club
Since winning promotion to the V-League 2017, Ho Chi Minh City FC has never been a worthy opponent of Hanoi FC. In 18 direct confrontations in official matches, the “Red Battleship” has not won a single time, losing 15 matches and drawing only 3 matches.
Last season, Ho Chi Minh City FC played extremely well under coach Phung Thanh Phuong and finished 4th overall but still lost to Hanoi FC in both matches. The wind could change direction in the upcoming confrontation, when the Thong Nhat Stadium team is in impressive form at the beginning of the 2024 - 2025 season.
Successfully retaining Patrik Le Giang, recruiting experienced defenders Adriano Schmidt, Manh Cuong... and young player Hoang Phuc gradually maturing, the "Red Battleship" has a solid foundation to deploy their strong defensive and attacking style of play.
Huy Toan returns to help strengthen the left wing of Ho Chi Minh City Club
In the midfield, young talents who grew up from Nutifood Academy such as Thanh Khoi and Vinh Nguyen began to show maturity and cleverness. Thanks to that, coach Phung Thanh Phuong and his team had a draw against The Cong Viettel team and defeated last season's runner-up Binh Dinh Club.
Not only that, Ho Chi Minh City FC is also the home field king, starting from the 2023-2024 season. They won up to 30 points out of a maximum of 42 points every time they played at Thong Nhat Stadium. This is an impressive number, no V-League team can match.
Meanwhile, Hanoi FC is off to a slow start. They won against Binh Dinh thanks to a moment of individual brilliance from captain Nguyen Van Quyet. In the capital derby against Viettel FC, they let their opponents come back to win 2-1.
Hanoi FC is having problems because their foreign players are not up to standard. Coach Le Duc Tuan did not hesitate to admit this fact after losing to Viettel FC, when players Hai Long, Hung Dung and Tuan Hai are having to "carry the Westerners" instead of relying on foreign players.
Coach Phung Thanh Phuong is helping Ho Chi Minh City Club play stably in V-League.
Most recently, Hanoi FC has parted ways with former Netherlands U.17 player Keziah Veendorp, replacing him with midfielder Jaha who used to play for Viettel FC. Not to mention they have yet to find a player of sufficient quality to replace Doan Van Hau on the left wing.
Young player Vu Dinh Hai or rookie Nguyen Xuan Kien have not made an impression. On the right wing, when Pham Xuan Manh was pushed up to play midfielder, Le Van Xuan playing defender was still not very effective, having been exploited by Khuat Van Khang and Tran Danh Trung.
On the technical cabin, Coach Phung Thanh Phuong also has an advantage as he is leading Ho Chi Minh City Club on the right track while Coach Le Duc Tuan has just taken over the hot seat since the beginning of the season.
With home field advantage, good form to be confident and gradually achieving stability in playing style, will the encounter at 7:15 p.m. on September 29 be an opportunity for the "Red Battleship" to break the curse and have the first victory against Hanoi Club in the V-League?
