Leading expert in theater research and criticism dies at 82

Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Tri Trac was born in 1943 in Nho Tong village (now Phu Xuyen district, Hanoi) in a family with many generations of medical practitioners. He was known as a leading expert in research, theater criticism theory, and won the State Prize for Literature and Arts. He passed away on the evening of September 27 at the age of 82.

Associate Professor Dr. Tran Tri Trac had artistic talent since childhood. At the age of 22, he was an excellent lead actor of the Ha Tay New Rice Cheo Troupe.

With impressive roles such as: Tan (play Before the Re-Army ), Father (play Spring Road ), Duc (play Sister Nhan ), Viet (play Eyes ), Secretary (play Spy List ), Le Huy (play Frontline Call ), Doctor (play Fire in the Rear ), Ngo Thi Nham (play Ngo Thi Nham )... Tran Tri Trac is loved by the audience and colleagues.

In 1969, he studied directing at the Vietnam Theatre Arts School. After graduating, Mr. Tran Tri Trac staged dozens of plays in many different genres such as: Waves, Lullaby of Life (Bach Dang Club, Hai Phong), Spring Road, Poem of Love (Ha Tay Drama and Dance Troupe), Wildflowers and Swords (Hoa Binh Folk Song and Dance Troupe), Muc Lien Thanh De (Hanoi Cheo Troupe), Brick Kiln Tung (General Logistics Cheo Troupe, Hanoi Cheo Troupe), Vuon Mon (Central Puppetry Theatre)...

Not only acting and directing, Associate Professor Dr. Tran Tri Trac also participated in writing stage scripts. At the age of 23, he wrote his first script, Before the Re-Arrest , which was staged and performed by the Ha Tay Song and Dance Troupe. Since then, he has written about 30 scripts, winning 19 awards.

Many of his scripts have been staged by professional theaters and art troupes such as: Vietnam Fatherland, Singing Voice, Unfortunate Woman, Post-War Love Story, Legendary Sacred Realm, Last Bullet...

Among them, the excerpt Tung Lo Gach (or Nghich doi ) in the play Nguoi a bat hanh , which he composed and directed, has become a model for a good cheo excerpt on a modern theme, performed by many artists, associated with the names of comedian Xuan Hinh and People's Artist Quoc Truong, and has been included in the training of model roles for Cheo actor training courses of the Hanoi University of Theatre and Cinema.

Experience in acting, directing and scriptwriting has become the luggage that helps Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Tri Trac determinedly pursue the path of becoming a theater critic.

Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Tri Trac has more than 300 articles published in specialized journals and 11 scientific research works written by himself.

Of which, 6 books won 8 awards such as: The book Philosophical, cultural and aesthetic foundations of ancient Cheo won the A prize from the Vietnam Stage Artists Association in 2012, the A prize from the Central Council of Theory and Criticism of Literature and Arts in 2013 and the State Prize for Literature and Arts in 2016. The book Ancient Cheo Poetics won the A prize in 2019 from the Vietnam Stage Artists Association. The book Cultural Foundations of Vietnamese Performing Arts won the B prize (no A prize) from the Central Council of Theory and Criticism of Literature and Arts in 2018. The book Revolutionary Cheo was awarded the B prize from the Vietnam Stage Artists Association in 2020.

Most recently, Associate Professor Dr. Tran Tri Trac published the book Tuong, which won the Encouragement Prize in 2023, and Folk Drama, which won the C prize from the Central Council for Theory and Criticism of Literature and Arts.

Dr. People's Artist Trieu Trung Kien, Director of the Vietnam Opera House - a student of Associate Professor Dr. Tran Tri Trac, shared: "I have a lot of connections with my teacher. When staging two plays written by him, Linh khi troi nam and Nguoi di tim minh chu, he was a dedicated, enthusiastic and thoughtful person, always urging his students, guiding them like parents supporting their children in their first steps. I am a cai luong artist who has embarked on the path of scientific research, thanks to his help, I successfully defended my Master's and Doctoral theses."
