Office workers are tired of headaches.

Going to the hospital for examination when she often experienced pain in the occipital region, Ms. LT (43 years old, Hanoi) said that about every 3-4 months, she had an attack and each attack lasted 1-2 days.

Two days before being admitted to the hospital, the pain increased significantly, spreading to the occipital region on both sides. Worryingly, Ms. T also felt numbness and pain in both arms.

MRI results of the cervical spine showed clear disc herniation at the C3/C4 level, herniation at the C4/C5 level (central body), C6/C7 disc bulge, spondylosis, and cervical disc herniation.

The habit of sitting and working with head bowed and little movement makes office workers prone to "office headaches" (illustrative photo).

Brain MRI revealed several white matter demyelination nodules in both cerebral hemispheres (Fazekas 1), and a small amount of fluid in the left ethmoid sinus.

Ms. T was diagnosed with occipital neuralgia accompanied by degeneration and herniated disc in the C3/4 - C4/5 spine. The doctors advised Ms. T to undergo medical treatment and scheduled a follow-up appointment.

Coming to the hospital in a similar condition, with frequent headaches and sometimes numbness in both arms, Ms. PH (39 years old, Hanoi) said that this condition has been prolonged and has greatly affected her health.

After examination and X-ray, Ms. H was diagnosed with occipital neuralgia due to degeneration and herniated disc in the spine.

These patients have in common that they have worked in an office for many years, sat for long periods of time, and had little movement or change of posture.

BSCKI. Hoang Anh Tuan, Neurology Specialist, Medlatec Tay Ho General Clinic said: "Office workers are susceptible to headaches related to the occipital nerve.

The disease often recurs, does not cause serious damage but greatly affects the quality of life. Common causes of tension headaches are pressure and stress from work, family...

Sitting in one position all day, bowing your head for too long, little exercise, unreasonable rest, and using pillows that are too high also make office workers "easy prey" for disease.

Doctor shows how to prevent "office headaches"

According to Dr. Tuan, occipital neuralgia is a common cause of headaches. Due to similar symptoms, occipital neuralgia is sometimes confused with migraine.

Occipital neuralgia can be primary, or secondary.

The disease can appear secondarily due to some underlying diseases such as: Trauma to the greater and lesser occipital nerves; Compression due to degenerative changes in the cervical spine; Tumors affecting the C2 and C3 nerve roots or infection.

"Most patients usually have pain on one side of the head, but it can also affect both sides of the head. The pain is located at the back of the head. The disease can be identified by signs of continuous pain.

The pain usually begins at the base of the skull and may radiate to the back or along the side of the head; Sharp, pulsating pain, alternating with sharp pains, or an electric shock-like sensation at points high in the neck, at the back of the head, behind the ears;

Or at first the pain is sparse, in bouts, then the interval between the bouts gradually shortens, up to 2-3 bouts/day, or even continuous pain," Dr. Tuan shared more about the symptoms of the disease.

To prevent disease, Dr. Tuan recommends that office workers should proactively not work on the computer continuously for more than 4 hours. It is best to take a 10-minute break every hour to relax the mind;

Massage the head area and do gentle exercises to relax the body such as stretching, bending and rotating the neck and back gently and slowly many times, and walking around the workplace; Drink water regularly and sufficiently, at least 2 liters per day;

In addition, office workers should avoid using coffee, because drinking too much coffee will stimulate the nerves and cause migraines;

Combine a reasonable diet, full of nutrients, pay attention to eating lots of green vegetables and fresh fruits; Should exercise regularly and moderately to have a healthy body and comfortable mood.

"If the headache recurs for a long time with a serious level, you need to proactively go for a medical examination to receive timely treatment," Dr. Tuan added.
