Tien Giang: Investigation into the type of alcohol that 6 poisoned people are suspected of drinking

According to the authorities of Tien Giang province, on March 29, a tourist group (consisting of 19 people) from Tien Giang province had lunch at the floating restaurant of VH Tourist Area (Ninh Thuan province). The food was cooked by the floating restaurant and 8 people drank 2 bottles of wine branded Sori Wine produced by KT Company Limited, 500ml bottle, manufactured on June 9, 2024, with an expiration date of 3 years from the date of manufacture.

At around 8:00 p.m. on March 29, the tour group had dinner at LT Restaurant ( Ninh Thuan Province), the food included vegetables, fried potatoes, and shrimp. In the group, 8 people drank about 10 bottles of wine branded as Sori Wine produced by KT Company Limited.

At around 11-12 o'clock on March 30, the tourist group was moving to Can Giuoc district, Long An province when 8 people showed signs of fatigue, dizziness, lethargy, headache, nausea, vomiting, of which 2 people also showed symptoms of cyanosis and convulsions and were taken to the Can Giuoc District Medical Center, Long An province for emergency treatment.

After that, Can Giuoc District Medical Center, Long An province transferred these 6 people to Cho Ray Hospital (Ho Chi Minh City) for continued treatment.

After an interdisciplinary consultation, doctors determined that 6 patients had alcohol poisoning, suspected to be caused by methanol (industrial alcohol). The two comatose patients, BVD (51 years old) and PNQK (25 years old), were transferred to the anti-poisoning resuscitation unit for ultrafiltration; the 4 conscious patients underwent emergency dialysis to quickly eliminate toxins.

After the incident, at 2:00 p.m. on April 1, the Tan Phu Dong District Medical Center, Tien Giang Province, went to the Tan Phu Dong District People's Court - the workplace of the poisoned people - to get information.

Accordingly, the District Medical Center recorded a list of 8 cases of suspected methanol poisoning. These people are currently being treated at Cho Ray Hospital (Ho Chi Minh City) and Military Hospital 120 (Tien Giang Province). Currently, 2 people treated at Military Hospital 120 have been discharged.

Through practical approach at Tan Phu Dong District People's Court, there are currently 11 bottles of KT cherry wine produced by KT Company Limited (address Chau Thanh District, Tien Giang Province).

Through information, the people who were poisoned by alcohol used this wine during their trip to Ninh Thuan province. Tan Phu Dong District Medical Center collected wine samples including 6 glass bottles (capacity 500 ml/bottle) to send for testing.

According to the Department of Industry and Trade of Tien Giang province, KT Company Limited has its headquarters in Chau Thanh district (Tien Giang), and its second facility in My Tho city (Tien Giang). Its business lines are the production of wine and bottled drinking water...

Facility 2 of KT Company Limited was granted Food Safety Eligibility Certificate No. 74/GCNATTP-SCT by the Department of Industry and Trade of Tien Giang province on March 22, 2023, valid until March 22, 2026.

This facility was granted a License to produce craft alcohol for business purposes No. 03/GP-PKT dated January 23, 2019 by the Economic Department of My Tho City (now the Economic, Infrastructure and Urban Department of My Tho City), valid until January 23, 2024.

Accordingly, this facility is allowed to produce ^29o white wine, ^29o cherry wine, ^29o sticky rice wine, with a production scale of 32,000 liters of wine per year.
