During the visit, Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio and his wife hosted a welcoming ceremony and solemnly hosted President Vo Van Thuong and his wife Phan Thi Thanh Tam. The two leaders also led high-ranking delegations from both countries to hold talks, assess the achievements in the 50 years of establishing diplomatic relations and propose directions for stronger cooperation in the coming time.

After the talks, the two leaders issued a Joint Statement on upgrading the Vietnam-Japan relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for Peace and Prosperity in Asia and the World; and witnessed the signing of cooperation documents between the two countries' ministries and sectors. Speaking at a joint press conference, the two leaders affirmed the two countries' desire to promote cooperation in all fields to new heights and expand to new areas of cooperation.
President Vo Van Thuong and his wife met with the Emperor and Empress of Japan; attended the ceremony to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Japan; and received leaders of several Japanese political parties and politicians. The President had meetings with the President of the House of Councilors and the President of the House of Representatives of Japan. In particular, the President visited and delivered a policy speech at the Japanese National Diet, the oldest legislative body in Asia.
In his speech, President Vo Van Thuong conveyed a message to leaders, parliamentarians and the majority of Japanese people about a reformed, open, peace-loving and development-aspiring Vietnam; about an independent, self-reliant, diversified and multilateral foreign policy; about being a friend, a reliable partner and a responsible member of the international community.
The President also reviewed the 50-year journey of friendship and cooperation between Vietnam and Japan and affirmed that the relationship between the two countries is a "heaven-ordained match"; at the same time, he shared the vision and major orientation to effectively implement the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for peace and prosperity in Asia and the world, determined to work with Japan to build a relationship between the two countries that is truly "sincere friends, trustworthy partners, strategic partners, and a sustainable future".
In Tokyo, President Vo Van Thuong spent time meeting and talking with officials and staff of the Vietnamese Embassy in Japan; met with representatives of generations of Vietnamese people in Japan who have contributed to the relationship between the two countries; received the Japan - Vietnam Friendship Parliamentarians' Union and attended the exchange program of Vietnamese Vovinam martial arts and Japanese martial arts. President Vo Van Thuong and his wife had a friendly meeting and had breakfast with Japanese families who had time to welcome Vietnamese youth through the Vietnam - Japan youth exchange programs.
Visiting Fukuoka Prefecture, President Vo Van Thuong received the Governor, Chairman of the Fukuoka Council and leaders of the Kyushu provinces; met with officials and staff of the Vietnamese Consulate General in Fukuoka and the Vietnamese community in the Kyushu region; received leaders of the Kyushu - Vietnam Friendship Association; and leaders of the Japan - Vietnam Experts Association. Before concluding the visit, President Vo Van Thuong and his delegation visited Kyushu University, the Center for Research and Development of Hydrogen Fuel Cell Technology and had a talk with outstanding Vietnamese students studying at the school.
