“The three leaders will have many opportunities to build friendship,” a South Korean official said, adding that no specific plans have been made as discussions are still ongoing.

This will be the first trilateral summit based on a common agenda among the three countries, rather than being held on the sidelines of a multilateral forum. In May, the leaders of the US, Japan and South Korea met on the sidelines of the Group of Seven (G7) Summit in Hiroshima, Japan.

According to information from South Korean officials, the delegation accompanying President Yoon Suk Yeol is expected to be small in size, and the rest of the leader's staff may stay in Washington, about 100 km from Camp David.

Earlier, the White House announced that President Joe Biden will host his South Korean counterpart Yoon Suk Yeol and Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio at Camp David.

At the end of June, Mr. Biden sent an invitation to attend a summit in Washington to the two allied leaders to discuss strengthening relations between Seoul and Tokyo, as well as enhancing trilateral cooperation.

Kurt Campbell, the US National Security Council’s coordinator for Indo-Pacific affairs, announced the invitation on June 29. Accordingly, he expected the thaw in relations between Asian neighbors to contribute to strengthening cooperation between Washington, Seoul and Tokyo in the face of security challenges in the region as well as in the world.

At a peace forum co-hosted by Yonhap news agency and the South Korean Unification Ministry, Mr. Campbell shared that the summit will look back at the important steps made in the relationship between Japan and South Korea, from which to continue to promote to ensure that progress is achieved and promote cooperation between the three countries in many fields in the future.

According to observers, this will be a new signal showing the tightening of solidarity between the US-Korea-Japan, in the context of security uncertainties related to the nuclear issue on the Korean peninsula, China's increasing assertiveness and the prolonged Russia-Ukraine conflict.
