VnExpressVnExpress21/06/2023

Arsenal have reached an agreement to sign striker Kai Havertz from Chelsea for a transfer fee of $83 million.

Arsenal will pay $79 million up front, and the remaining four million will be paid later based on the agreement in the contract. Previously, the Gunners also reached an agreement with the German striker on his personal benefits. Havertz only needs to pass a medical examination before signing an official contract with Arsenal.

Havertz will be Arsenal's first new signing in the summer of 2023, and the second most expensive player to join the team, after Nicolas Pepe with a transfer fee of 87 million USD in the 2019-2020 season.

Last season's Premier League runners-up are also ready to break their transfer record to bring midfielder Declan Rice to Emirates. They have just submitted an offer worth 95 million USD up front, and 19 million USD later to West Ham, but the team has refused to sell Rice. However, Arsenal has not given up on the idea of bringing Rice to lead the midfield to replace Granit Xhaka and Thomas Partey.

Chelsea bought Havertz from Leverkusen in 2019 for a transfer fee that could reach $114 million. He has played 139 games for Chelsea, scoring 32 goals and assisting 15. His most important goal was scored in the 2021 Champions League final, helping Chelsea beat Man City and win the title. Although Havertz is not a natural striker, he has been used in this position for the past few years.

According to Athletic , Havertz is a perfect fit for Arsenal's style of play, with his 1.90m height and good technique. Coach Mikel Arteta plans to use the 24-year-old striker in many positions, such as a central striker or an attacking midfielder. He also fits Arsenal's philosophy of using young players, alongside attacking players aged 25 and under such as Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli.
