CEO Tim Cook never considered Steve Jobs a rival.

According to TechGoing , Tim Cook started working at Apple in 1998. At that time, Apple was in dire financial straits and on the verge of bankruptcy. As a supply chain expert, Tim Cook helped Apple achieve extremely high profit margins. Tim Cook rose to the top position of Apple in 2011 and took over as CEO of the company just a few months before Steve Jobs passed away.

Tim Cook believes only Steve Jobs could have created Apple

However, when reminded of the success he has brought to Apple since taking over as CEO of Apple, Tim Cook said: “I think only Steve could have created Apple. We owe him a debt of gratitude and I am sure that if he were alive today, the company would be doing very well and he would continue to be CEO.”

According to Tim Cook, becoming a good successor to Steve Jobs is not easy and he himself does not consider Steve Jobs as a competitor. He also said that since working at Apple, he feels very happy to share the achievements during his tenure with Steve Jobs as well as the whole company, because the credit belongs to everyone.

Under Tim Cook's leadership, Apple's market capitalization reached $1 trillion in 2018, becoming the first U.S. company to join the trillion-dollar club. Apple's market value reached $2 trillion in 2020, and by September 2023, the company's market value had skyrocketed to $3 trillion.

Although Tim Cook was handpicked by Steve Jobs, there were still some mixed voices during his tenure. One of the main criticisms of Tim Cook was that he came from the finance department and not from Apple’s design team. Even Jobs himself said that Tim Cook “is not a product person.” Steve Jobs had a close relationship with Apple’s design team, especially former Chief Design Officer Jony Ive.

Tim Cook and Ive are said to have clashed occasionally, but the current Apple CEO has dismissed the claims as “factually inconsistent” and “ignorant” of how Apple and its product design teams work. Jony Ive left Apple in 2019 but continues to provide consulting services to the company.

Despite Apple’s current market capitalization being three times what it was under Steve Jobs, Tim Cook has released fewer new standalone products than he did during his tenure as CEO. That’s changing, however, as Apple prepares to launch its first major new product since the Apple Watch, the Vision Pro augmented reality headset. The device was developed entirely without Jobs’ supervision.

Tim Cook is the driving force behind Apple’s services business. Amid increasingly fierce competition in the smartphone business, Apple’s services business has been a bright spot. Cook himself has been praised for his ability to experiment with new things, perhaps a self-driving car.
