Fans demand to fine and fire coach Shin Tae-yong, Indonesian football boss says: No!

At the AFF Cup 2024, the Indonesian team ended the group stage with disappointing results: 1 win, 1 draw and 2 losses. Coach Shin Tae-yong's team only had 4 points, ranked 3rd in Group B and was eliminated. More notably, in the final match, Indonesia lost 0-1 at home to the Philippines, thereby losing the ticket to the next round and to their opponents.

The poor results have caused coach Shin Tae-yong to receive a lot of criticism from Indonesian fans. In response to the extreme actions of Indonesian fans on social media, Mr. Sumardji had to speak up. He called on Indonesian fans to refrain from attacking coach Shin Tae-yong and Mr. Erick Thohir because the above actions are unnecessary. Mr. Sumardji expressed: “Of course, criticism is allowed, but please do not attack and create conflicts between Mr. Erick Thohir and coach Shin Tae-yong. This must be clarified and we should create good stories.”

Mr. Sumardji also added about the future of coach Shin Tae-yong: “In my opinion, coach Shin Tae-yong should stay in the national team and Mr. Erick should stay in PSSI. I know very well that Mr. Erick is fighting for PSSI. I am also a member of the organization so I understand that all the components in PSSI are operating in an extraordinary way.

Coach Shin Tae-yong’s current position must be maintained. As for evaluation and improvement, of course PSSI must do it. However, using such a squad and being eliminated from the 2024 AFF Cup is not a disaster.”

In addition to the above sharing, Mr. Sumardji emphasized that PSSI still considers the 3rd qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup as the main goal in the coming time. If Indonesia continues to have poor results, the future of coach Shin Tae-yong will be considered. Therefore, he hopes that Indonesian fans will continue to trust the Korean coach and support the Indonesian team.

“Don’t spoil the atmosphere in the federation. The national team is still having difficulties in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Let’s cheer for the national team,” Mr. Sumardji concluded.
