People who eat about two slices of bacon or one sausage a day have a higher risk of developing dementia.

In recent years, many studies have shown that consuming large amounts of red meat and processed meat can increase the risk of colorectal cancer, heart disease and stroke. Recently, scientists continue to warn that regularly eating these two types of food can also increase the risk of dementia.

The study involved 133,000 people. Scientists collected data on the participants' diets over a 2- to 4-year period to investigate the link between eating habits and the risk of dementia.

The results showed that people who consumed about 2 slices of bacon or 1 sausage per day had a 13% higher risk of developing this disease.

In addition, scientists also shared with Express.co.uk that the risk of dementia can be reduced by up to 28% if you replace part of your red meat with fish in your diet.

Eating poultry such as chicken can also reduce the risk of this disease by about 19%.

Additionally, replacing processed red meat with plant-based foods like nuts and beans can reduce the risk of developing the disease by about 19%.

“We found that processed red meat can increase the risk of cognitive decline and dementia, but the good news is that the study also found that replacing processed red meat with healthier foods such as nuts, fish and poultry can reduce the risk of this disease,” said Dr. Daniel Hang, lead author of the study and an expert at Harvard University, USA.

The study concluded: “Overall, our study adds to the growing body of evidence that consumption of processed red meat may increase the risk of non-communicable diseases, including dementia.”

A previous study published in 2021 also found that nitrites found in processed meats can cause oxidative stress, activate inflammatory cytokines, or affect mechanisms involved in the development of dementia.

According to Express.co.uk, increased consumption of processed meat can also cause fatty acids to build up in the body. Scientists warn that these acids can contribute to an increased risk of dementia.

Data from the World Health Organization (WHO) shows that there are currently more than 55 million people living with dementia globally. Each year, the world records nearly 10 million new cases.

According to information on the Mayo Clinic website, dementia is a term that describes a group of symptoms that affect memory, thinking, and social abilities.

Symptoms of this disease include cognitive and psychological changes such as:

- Memory loss.

- Have difficulty communicating or finding the right words.

- Easily disoriented or lost.

- Difficulty performing complex tasks.

- Reduced ability to plan and organize work.

- Poor coordination and control of movement.

- Signs of depression.

- Often anxious or agitated.

The above symptoms can seriously affect the patient's daily life.
