The 17th Red Sunday blood donation program will take place on December 29 at Hanoi University of Science and Technology. The program is hosted by Tien Phong Newspaper, in coordination with the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, and the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union of provinces and cities.
First held in 2009, the Red Sunday program received 96 units of blood. After 16 years, the scale of implementation has expanded to more than 50 provinces and cities and the amount of blood received has increased many times (55,000 - 60,000 units of blood/year). From 2025, the program will hold a launching ceremony in Hanoi and a number of provinces and cities in accordance with the blood needs of local medical facilities.
According to the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, the Institute and hospitals estimate that about 80,000 units of blood are needed for emergency and treatment in the 2 months before, during and after Tet. The Red Sunday blood donation program contributes to ensuring enough blood and safe blood for patients at times when there is a risk of blood shortage.
