Teachers and students of Nguyen Du Secondary School (District 1, Ho Chi Minh City) study and focus on reviewing knowledge for the 10th grade exam.
Scoring principles
Accordingly, candidates taking the 10th grade exam will take 3 compulsory subjects: math, literature, foreign language (if registering for regular 10th grade) and specialized subject (if registering for specialized school or class).
Students can register for 3 priority wishes 1, 2, 3 to take the entrance exam to grade 10 of public high schools (except Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted, Tran Dai Nghia High School for the Gifted and Ho Chi Minh City National University High School for the Gifted).
The admission score is the total score of the 3 exams and additional points for priority subjects. Successful candidates must take all 3 exams and not have any exam with a score of 0.
Based on the 10th grade enrollment quota of each school, based on the number of candidates registering for each wish and the admission scores, the Department of Education and Training will review and announce the admission scores of each school according to the principle that the admission score for wish 2 is not lower than the admission score for wish 1 and the admission score for wish 3 is not lower than the admission score for wish 2.
Students' admission will be based on the 3 wishes that the student has registered in order of priority from wish 1 to wish 2 and wish 3.
Admission score for specialized classes is the total score including: literature, foreign language, math and specialized subject (coefficient 2).
In addition, based on reality, the Department of Education and Training annually publicly announces high schools that teach integrated English programs.
Admission requirements are that students graduating from secondary school in the 2023-2024 school year in Ho Chi Minh City must be within the prescribed age and must meet the conditions of one of the following two groups:
Group 1 : Students participating in the integrated English program at secondary school level in Ho Chi Minh City must meet the following conditions:
- Participated in the 10th grade entrance exam in Ho Chi Minh City.
- Students register for the integrated English program
Based on the 10th grade entrance exam scores and the average score of the integrated English program, these students will be given priority in schools that teach the integrated English program.
The calculation of admission scores for the integrated English program is as follows:
* Admission score = literature score + foreign language score + math score + average score of integrated English program (on a 10-point scale).
Only consider candidates who are eligible to take the entrance exam, have taken all required exams, have not violated exam regulations during the entrance exam, and have not scored 0 on any exam.
Group 2 : Students who do not participate in the integrated English program at secondary school level in Ho Chi Minh City must meet the following conditions:
- Graduated from junior high school with good or above.
- Participate in the 10th grade entrance exam. In addition to the 3 required subjects of literature, math, and foreign language, students must register and take the integrated English exam.
The calculation of admission scores for the integrated English program is as follows:
* Admission score = literature score + foreign language score + math score + integrated English exam score (on a 10-point scale).
Only consider candidates who are eligible to take the entrance exam, have taken all required exams, have not violated exam regulations during the entrance exam, and have not scored 0 on any exam.
Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training will shorten the time for 10th grade admission compared to previous years.
Shorten the time for 10th grade admission
At the preliminary review of the examination work held in early December, Mr. Le Hoai Nam, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, also said that, based on experience in the 10th grade admission work in the 2023-2024 school year, the Department proposed a number of solutions and goals to ensure maximum benefits for students studying at public schools while gradually reducing the rate of students who are admitted but do not apply to public schools.
Accordingly, the Department of Education and Training will compile and analyze in detail all data on admission to grade 10 in the last 3 years of the entire city by district, county, and secondary school, combined with data on home addresses and distances from home to school of students through 2 years of piloting the application of GIS maps, providing assessments on the registration of wishes and admission results of each secondary school. Based on the assessment, the Department of Education and Training will coordinate with the Departments of Education and Training to review the entire consultation and guidance process of a number of secondary schools with a high rate of successful candidates but not submitting applications.
In addition, the Department of Education and Training plans to change and supplement the competition assessment criteria for evaluating the results of admission to grade 10. Accordingly, the results must be based on the number of students applying to the school to be admitted, with the aim of avoiding the situation where some units chase after achievements and instruct students to register for schools far from home.
Based on the experience of the 10th grade entrance exam results in the 2023-2024 school year, Mr. Le Hoai Nam said that the Department is developing plans to change the entire process of reviewing specialized and general admission requests at public high schools. These plans are built on the basis of striving to ensure the achievement of goals such as: shortening the time to announce results; supporting students to increase their chances of being admitted to public schools according to their registered wishes. Gradually reducing the number of students who are admitted but do not submit their admission application each year.
