Overseas Vietnamese from Quang Binh, idolizes Cong Phuong
While the V-League teams mainly sign contracts with overseas Vietnamese players from the West, Thanh Hoa Club attracted attention when recruiting an overseas Vietnamese player from neighboring Laos, Damoth Thongkhamsavath. The midfielder’s maternal grandparents, born in 2004, are from Quang Binh and have long since settled in Laos. This player will face the Vietnamese team at Binh Duong Stadium on March 25.
Being of Vietnamese origin, Damoth can communicate in Vietnamese so it won't take him long to integrate into the new environment. He also follows Vietnamese football quite often and idolizes Quang Hai, Van Toan, and Cong Phuong.

Star of the Laos team
Along with captain Bounphachan Bounkong, Damoth is one of the most dangerous players on the Laos team. In the 2024-2025 Lao National Championship, he contributed greatly to Ezra Club's journey to the championship with 7 goals and 4 assists after 12 matches. Thanks to that, Damoth also won the title of Best Player of the tournament. This is also the first time after 22 years of establishment, Ezra Club has stepped onto the highest podium. The impressive performance of the 21-year-old player helped Thanh Hoa Club notice and recruit him. At the FIFA Days training session in March, he was also summoned by coach Ha Hyeok-jun.
In fact, Damoth has been a member of the national team for 3 years. In 2022, he was given his debut by coach Michael Weiss in a friendly match against Brunei when he was under 18 years old. At the 2024 AFF Cup, this midfielder started all 4 group stage matches, played very impressively and left 2 assists. However, due to the overall quality of the Lao team not being too good, Damoth could not "carry" the team through the group stage. It can be said that he is now a pillar of the Lao team despite his young age.
Damoth is a skilled player, skillful in dribbling and always plays confidently, so he is often fouled by opponents.

But if you look at Damoth's development journey, it is understandable that he has matured to the present. And the person who has had a great influence on this midfielder's career is Coach Weiss, former head coach of the Laos national teams (U.19, U.23 and national team). Since taking up the task in early 2022, the German strategist has actively given opportunities to young players. Damoth and his teammates have been continuously "tested" in tournaments such as U.23 Southeast Asia, SEA Games and even the AFF Cup.
During that period, the Laos U.23 team caused a lot of trouble for opponents like Singapore and Thailand, defeating the Malaysia U.23 team twice. In mid-2022, the Laos U.19 team, with Damoth as a mainstay, defeated the Thailand U.19 team in the semi-finals of the Southeast Asian U.19 tournament.
The Vietnamese team will begin their journey in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers against Laos. Coach Kim Sang-sik and his team are of course rated higher, but coach Ha Hyeok-jun's team is also improving day by day and Damoth, the leading star of the Lao team, is also ready to create a surprise.
