Universities in the race for international quality accreditation

Báo Dân tríBáo Dân trí01/11/2024

(Dan Tri) - Universities need to strive to improve and ensure the quality of education, which is the top priority when pursuing international quality accreditation programs.

The above information was just shared at the 7th "Internationalization of Higher Education" forum, organized by Foreign Trade University on November 1 in Hanoi.

According to Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Thu Huong, Vice Principal of Foreign Trade University, international accreditation has certain benefits for educational institutions.

However, to meet the requirements of international quality accreditation, universities must first ensure quality. This is the journey for us to gradually move towards international education standards.

At the same time, schools need to have a clear roadmap to build quality to meet international standards.

"After the process of getting acquainted with accreditation standards, the current trend is that Vietnamese universities are beginning to form a strategic orientation to approach international standards.

It can be seen that this trend is currently growing strongly and this is a challenge for domestic schools to be recognized by international organizations.

However, I think the process of achieving international quality accreditation is important.

Universities need to strive and improve to achieve quality education, that is what universities should put first when pursuing international accreditation programs," Associate Professor Dr. Pham Thu Huong shared.

Regarding the trend of international cooperation of universities, Associate Professor Dr. Pham Thu Huong said that in the current period of rapid development, taking advantage of international development in educational development is very important.

Therefore, we should promote all areas that can be exploited, and this is the driving force for domestic universities to cooperate in international development.

Especially in areas of strength or areas we wish to develop, international cooperation helps us achieve growth goals faster and more effectively.

"International cooperation is a long-term process and the parties build trust with each other. Therefore, from the beginning, we have a strong commitment.

Therefore, the journey of creating trust and jointly exploiting new resources will be effective in developing Vietnam's education," Associate Professor, Dr. Thu Huong affirmed.

Regarding this, Professor Julia Gaimster, Vice President of RMIT University Vietnam, said that Vietnamese higher education institutions are trying to ensure the best quality.

For accreditation programs, domestic educational institutions must comply with Vietnamese regulations.

At the forum, Associate Professor Dr. Bui Anh Tuan, Principal of Foreign Trade University, said that international branches play an important role in providing high-quality university education.

International branch campuses provide students with access to high-quality international education without having to leave their home country. However, the process of establishing and operating international branch campuses is not easy.

Many higher education institutions in Vietnam are trying to expand their facilities but are limited by resources, while international higher education institutions want to set up branches but face many difficulties.

This is one of the reasons why Foreign Trade University organized the internationalization forum, to share knowledge and experience on innovative models in international cooperation in higher education.

At the forum, guests discussed opportunities, as well as difficulties and promising future directions for building international branches in developing countries, including Vietnam.

According to statistics from the Department of Quality Management, Ministry of Education and Training, as of December 31, 2023, the whole country has 187 educational institutions recognized as meeting educational quality standards according to domestic standards, 9 educational institutions meeting educational quality standards according to foreign standards.

Thus, out of a total of 244 higher education institutions (not including educational institutions belonging to the military and police sectors), currently the whole country has 187/244 educational institutions recognized as meeting educational quality standards according to domestic standards.

About 57 higher education institutions have not been accredited or recognized as meeting standards (according to domestic standards).
