With research works of scientific and practical value, female scientists have made positive and significant contributions in many fields. They are the flowers of intelligence and the light of knowledge, the pride of the country's science.
Young female professor of psychology
Professor, PhD Dang Hoang Minh was born in 1979, currently Head of the Faculty of Educational Sciences and Director of the Institute for Clinical Research on Social Psychology and Education, University of Education (Vietnam National University, Hanoi). She is the youngest professor to be appointed in 2023 and is currently the youngest professor in the field of psychology.
Professor, Dr. Dang Hoang Minh has a special passion for Psychology. She grew up in a family with parents working in the Education and Health sectors. In 1997, when her friends all chose to enter universities in the economic sector, which were popular for their employment and development opportunities after graduation, Dang Hoang Minh chose Psychology.
Professor, Dr. Dang Hoang Minh said: "My mother, a doctor specializing in treating mental problems for patients, said that the next century will be the century of psychology, because as society develops, understanding people's minds will become more important. Our generation when we were in high school knew almost nothing about psychology, but when I entered university to study psychology, I discovered many interesting things."
Ms. Dang Hoang Minh chose to major in clinical psychology, interested in and researching issues related to human mental disorders, psychological disorders and human behavior. The female professor, PhD said: "When studying mental illnesses, I realized that there were patients whose brains and bodies had no damage but had abdominal pain or paralysis of limbs as if they were related to the nerves. In fact, they were suffering from mental problems, which are called mental illnesses."
After graduating with a degree in psychology from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University, Hanoi), Ms. Dang Hoang Minh received her master's degree in 2002 and in 2007, received her PhD in psychology from the University of Toulouse II-Le Mirail (France), then continued her post-doctoral internship at Vanderbilt University (USA).
Professor, Dr. Dang Hoang Minh has held many positions such as: Coordinator of the Master's program in Vocational Psychology - French National Institute for Vocational Labor (L'INETOP), French University Center and Faculty of Education (Hanoi National University); Coordinator of the Master's and Doctoral programs in clinical studies, Director of the Center for Vocational Information and Applied Psychology Research, Head of the Department of Education and Therapy, University of Education (Hanoi National University).
She was also Secretary, then President of the Interdisciplinary Science Council of Psychology-Education, National Foundation for Science and Technology Development (Nafosted), Director of the Young Talents Fund of Psychology-Education, Vietnam Association of Psychology-Education Science...
In the field of clinical psychology, Professor, Dr. Dang Hoang Minh researches in three main directions. The first direction is the mental illness problems of children and adolescents. Studies assess the rate of mental disorders in Vietnamese children and adolescents such as disorders, depression, anxiety, negative childhood experiences, and tools for assessing mental illness.
The second direction is the mental health capacity of different population groups. Studies focus on analyzing people's knowledge, attitudes towards mental health... as well as programs to improve mental health capacity.
The third direction is to develop and implement psychotherapy and mental health intervention programs, especially school-based programs. Professor Dang Hoang Minh has guided four PhD students to successfully defend their theses, completed two scientific research projects at Hanoi National University, three at the State level, five international projects, published 90 scientific articles, including 23 scientific articles in prestigious international journals, and published 18 books in prestigious publishers.
As a researcher, teacher and therapist, Professor, Dr. Dang Hoang Minh is very concerned about mental health issues in modern society. She said that in our country, 20-25% of the population has mental health problems, 50% of which are related to young people. Mental health problems often start very early, at the age of 13-14.
Professor, Dr. Dang Hoang Minh is particularly interested in the issue of education, counseling, and mental health care in schools. She and her colleagues are carrying out many projects that both treat and raise people's awareness of issues related to mental health. Professor, Dr. Dang Hoang Minh said: "Currently, in schools, there is the participation of psychological counselors for students, however, in schools, that job is done by part-time teachers and there are not necessarily vacancies.
In the medical field, from 2023, clinical psychology has become a major recognized by the Ministry of Health that requires a practice certificate. This ensures a stable and clear job for students studying clinical psychology. This will be a good start for training and in fact, in recent years, the number of students studying psychology has increased."
Passionate about developing materials science applications in medicine
With a passion and enthusiasm for scientific research, after more than 12 years working in the field of materials science, Dr. Le Thi Phuong, Deputy Head of the Department of Biopharmaceutical Materials, Institute of Applied Materials Science (Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology) has achieved many outstanding achievements, including owning one international patent and two national patents.
Dr. Le Thi Phuong (37 years old) is one of the young female scientists in materials science research, especially in research on materials for cancer treatment and medical applications.
After graduating from the Chemical Engineering major at the University of Technology (Ho Chi Minh City National University), Ms. Phuong worked at the Institute of Applied Materials Science, where she nurtured her love for scientific research, and from there had the opportunity to do research at Ajou University (Korea) for 10 years.
Dr. Phuong said: During her time studying in Korea, she had to overcome many difficulties and hardships, but those efforts helped her gain many significant achievements in her research career. Bringing with her scientific articles as well as research projects that were registered for patents and national/international ownership, in early 2022, Dr. Phuong decided to return to Vietnam to continue her passion for science at the Institute of Applied Materials Science.
One of the outstanding research works of Dr. Le Thi Phuong is the development of a therapy system combining two methods: Gas therapy and starvation, to enhance the effectiveness of cancer treatment. This system is manufactured based on the combination of three main components: Glucose Oxidase (GOx), Functionalized Zinc Oxide Nano, Tannic Acid.
Dr. Le Thi Phuong emphasized the outstanding advantage of this material is its ability to attack in multiple ways: It both "starves" the tumor by depleting the glucose source and provides gas therapy through the release of NO. This combination allows the system to achieve higher cancer cell killing efficiency, while reducing side effects compared to monotherapies such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
In terms of application, this material is being tested in in vivo studies (method of studying the effects of drugs on living organisms), with publications in prestigious international journals oriented towards cancer treatment. This research direction not only opens up a "green" treatment model with negligible side effects but also promises to provide a new, safe and effective solution for cancer patients in the future.
Dr. Le Thi Phuong's main research direction is to develop new hydrogel systems using bioactive substances (such as antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and scar prevention) in wound healing extracted from medicinal extracts.
According to Dr. Phuong, this is a research direction that is not new in the world or in Vietnam, but it is highly practical and urgent, especially for developing countries like Vietnam. Because it opens up a therapy to help take care of patients' health right at home, promptly without having to go to the hospital as well as requiring the skills of doctors and specialists like when using traditional surgical and wound suturing methods, thereby reducing pressure on the health sector.
With more than 40 scientific articles in prestigious international journals, a monograph for undergraduate and graduate teaching programs, and important contributions to materials science research, a challenging research field, Dr. Le Thi Phuong was awarded the Golden Globe Science and Technology Award (2022) and top 10 promising young Vietnamese faces in 2022 (in the field of scientific research).
Currently working as a guest lecturer at many schools and institutes such as Ton Duc Thang University, Tra Vinh University, Lac Hong University, Saigon University of Technology, Academy of Science and Technology..., Dr. Le Thi Phuong contributes to spreading the passion for scientific research to students, that is "Young people keep the flame of passion, but at the same time do not be far from reality. Work, try to be constantly creative and do not be discouraged when failing, success will come to you at the right time...". As for Dr. Phuong, she always believes that every challenge is an opportunity to develop and affirm one's own value in the field of science.
