On the afternoon of March 31, in Tha Khet town, Khammouane province, Lao People's Democratic Republic, the working delegation of Ca Mau province and Khammouane province held a meeting to evaluate the project of rice cultivation combined with giant freshwater prawn farming.
Attending the meeting were Member of the Provincial Party Standing Committee, Head of the Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Committee of Ca Mau Provincial Party Committee Ho Trung Viet and Member of the Provincial Party Standing Committee, Secretary of Ca Mau City Party Committee Tran Hong Quan. On the side of Kham Muon province, there were Dr. Keo U Don - But Sinh Khon, Member of the Provincial Party Standing Committee, Deputy Governor of Kham Muon province.
A delegation of officials from Ca Mau province surveyed the rice-crop farming project in Song Muong village and discussed with people in the project area.
The project of rice cultivation combined with giant freshwater prawn farming was implemented by the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Ca Mau province, Vietnam in coordination with the Department of Agriculture and Forestry of Khammouane province, Laos in Nong Ping village, Nhom Ma Lat district and Song Muong village, Nong Buk district, Khammouane province, with 21 households participating.
To implement this project, the specialized sector of Ca Mau province purchased materials and transported shrimp seeds from Ca Mau province to Kham Muon province and sent staff to support training and technical transfer.

Initial results show that the project has brought positive results, however, rice and shrimp productivity has not reached the set target. The average rice yield in the project area reached 3.74 tons/ha, 0.3 tons/ha higher than outside the project area, while ST24 rice from Ca Mau alone reached 3.88 tons/ha. Regarding giant freshwater prawns, after 5 months of farming, the prawns reached an average weight of 24 per kg. Because the 2 districts did not have additional water for farming, households harvested earlier than expected, with an average yield of 75 kg/ha.

The functional departments of the two provinces have discussed to remove technical difficulties and obstacles, overcome weaknesses to achieve more effective project implementation results in the coming time.
Head of the Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Department of Ca Mau Provincial Party Committee Ho Trung Viet congratulated Kham Muon province on its new direction in production when coordinating with Ca Mau province to implement the project of growing rice combined with raising giant freshwater prawns. Ca Mau province is very happy to contribute to the initial success of this project. The functional departments of the two provinces are very determined, the households in the project area are also very excited with the results of the project and have the direction to develop into a new production model in the locality.
