Nearby destinations flourish
In 2024, Hoi An will welcome more than 4.4 million visitors, reaching about 95% of the plan set out at the beginning of the year (more than 4.6 million). This also leads to the number of visitors buying tickets to visit the city not reaching the set target in both international and domestic tourist segments.
The target of visitors purchasing tickets to Hoi An this year was not met mainly because Hoi An Ancient Town (the destination with the largest number of visitors purchasing tickets with more than 1.72 million) only reached about 86% of the planned number of visitors purchasing tickets. This is a noteworthy issue that needs to be resolved soon to improve in the near future.
Other destinations with ticket sales in the city have reached or exceeded the target. Of which, visitors buying tickets to visit Thanh Ha pottery village (670 thousand) and Tra Que vegetable village (24.5 thousand) have reached exactly 100% of the plan. The number of visitors buying tickets to visit Bay Mau coconut forest (920 thousand) and Cu Lao Cham (217 thousand) has exceeded the set plan and increased compared to the same period in 2023.
A notable highlight is that the number of visitors to Kim Bong carpentry village recorded good growth with about 9,000 visitors in 2024, especially after the government launched tour guiding activities here since June.
According to Mr. Nguyen Van Lanh - Vice Chairman of Hoi An City People's Committee, although the target of number of visitors was not met, there were some positive signs through statistics. Of the more than 4.4 million visitors to Hoi An, more than 3.5 million visitors bought tickets to visit, this is a very high rate.
Room occupancy rate reached 46%, slightly lower than last year, however it should be noted that this year there are quite a few accommodation establishments coming back into operation, so overall the accommodation situation in Hoi An continues to improve.
Strengthening sustainable destinations
This year, destinations in the city continue to make moves towards sustainable development. In Cu Lao Cham, a pilot program has been launched to certify biodiversity-friendly facilities to encourage green accommodation establishments; many destinations in Cam Kim have also seen a boost thanks to the support package for community tourism development.
These activities are implemented with the support of the project “Integrating natural resource management and biodiversity conservation goals into socio-economic development planning and management of biosphere reserves in Vietnam”.
Meanwhile, the basket boat activities in Cam Thanh were basically rearranged after the establishment of the Cam Thanh coconut forest basket boat service cooperative. During the year, Hoi An also decided to build a tour route to Tra Que vegetable village, Thanh Ha pottery village and Cu Lao Cham. The highlight of the year was that Tra Que vegetable village was honored by the United Nations Tourism Organization (UN Tourism) as the “Best Tourist Village” in 2024.
According to the suggestion and encouragement of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, in the coming time, Hoi An City plans to continue to consolidate and build a profile for the Cam Thanh coconut forest destination to apply to join the network of the world's best agricultural and rural villages in the direction of a fishing village with production industries and tourism activities related to rivers.
“This year, Hoi An tourism continues to receive many honors from international organizations. Although there are comments about the saturation of titles, in fact, it is the soft power of Hoi An tourism, contributing greatly to attracting more visitors to the destinations. The important thing is to continue to improve the destination environment and product quality to be worthy of those titles,” said Mr. Nguyen Van Lanh.
